First post!

I've had HomeRecording.com bookmarked forever but it's only now that I start posting... lazy!

I'm having a bit of trouble with trying to finish off a bunch of tracks I recorded just over four years ago (yep, lazy). I've bought a couple of very decent mics since then and worked on my voice a little over the past while, so I'm thinking of finally biting the bullet and finishing these things off once and for all!

I'm wondering if anyone could give me some feedback on the music and mixes first though, as I'm also thinking of re-working them into a new project to give them a new lease of life if they can't be salvaged. :D

I'm open to all criticism and advice so don't hold back!
Thanks a lot folks!

EDIT: I've just realised I'm using MySpace with garbage compression etc... I'm looking into a few other sites to use for hosting so in the meantime I s'pose it will have to do for now! Whoops... ;)

Don’t worry about moving your tunes off your MySpace page. They sound just fine.

I let them play while I was working.

There’s not much really to comment on.

The songs are all real long instrumentals with two chords and some 80s style leads thrown in.

Guitars, synths and a drum machine.

You’re not gonna make a big splash with what you have here.

What does your girl friend think?

First of all, thanks a lot for giving it a listen, I really appreciate it! :)

The songs are instrumental so far because I haven't got round to recording the vocals just yet. I was hoping to do that soon unless I'd be better off using the music I have on a different project; in which case I'd be re-doing them as instrumental again but in a different way. I just thought that it would be a shame if I had recorded these tunes four years ago and not done anything with them :D

I didn't mean for them to be too long either, but perhaps without the vocals they would sound a bit too long-winded and meandering. I've come to that conclusion many times...!

And... well, there's no girlfriend to have an opinion :D

Thanks again for listening. Cheers! :drunk:

You have a knack for good tunes and your mixes are pretty good too. An instrumental is a nice change...

Sunrise - that reverse sound used for percussion doesn't do it for me. The rest sounds great, nice leads. A little over compressed maybe - tends to lose the leads at times

Tired - nice bright guitars - Strat? - The acoustic sounds really nice. Balanced nicely. This is a nicer listen than Sunrise sonically.

For a MySpace this sounds pretty decent....

Yea I know what you mean.
I have a lot of stuff I never posted and think I should.
For if I die no one will ever hear it.
Then I get spanked by the cold hand of reality and realize nobody would care anyway.

Girlfriend, boyfriend whatever.
My wife hates everything I do so I know I can count on her for honest criticism.
Rarely will you get an unbiased critique on the net.
There’s too much me me me and spamming, and people tend to be perfunctory.

So honestly ha ha the one thing that sounded cheesy to me was the drum machine. I think I’d update the drum sounds post haste – hip hip or whatever they say over there.

Wow, thanks for the replies so far!

@ ido1957
'Sunrise' is actually my own version of an old song I used to play in my old band *years* ago... I think we wrote in 2002. I then wanted to see how it sounded reversed so I added some faffing-around and I thought the end result (what you heard) was kind of different and pleasant-sounding. I know what you're saying about the drum machine though... it's an Alesis SR-16 so it's not the most up-to-date solution! For 'Tired' I used my Epiphone Les Paul with Wilkinson zebra 'buckers and I was surprised at how clean it sounded. I have a Mexican Strat which is an excellent guitar but that's only been acquired in the last two years so at the time I only had the Epiphone LP and an Aria Pro II Magna Series super-Strat at my disposal... I'm supposed to be a bass player! :D Thanks for the feedback; I really appreciate it! Also, it's not my cat but I thought it looked familiar so a quick Photoshop job made me giggle a bit...

@ Manslick
Yeah the drum machine's cymbals in particular sound horrifying but thankfully I've had my hands on Reason and a couple of programs to hopefully rectify that problem. Cheers!

Reason rocks.
Get Record too, the upgrade is 150 bucks.
You will like the mixing and mastering power that comes with Record.

I'm looking forward to see how these ideas evolve. Each is pretty solid but definately underdeveloped. You seem to have a nice grasp of contrast...I liked the up/down flow of the LP Away from Here especially. These tunes would probably sound much fuller in .wav or a higher bitrate mp3.

Good foundations, all of them...well, I can't get past the backward tracking in Sunrise...it just leads me away from the tune. :D

Thanks a lot for the replies folks, I really, really appreciate it! That's the most feedback I've ever had and it feels good to gather opinions.

I've been inspired to do some more work on these tracks to finish them (as much as I can anyway) and I've even switched off the 'quantize' control on the SR-16... I'll have to count on my own sense of rhythm now. Serious business. Hehe!

This is a really great site, and as I've said before I was visiting years ago before I registered for the forum. I'm so glad I did... I'll be around :D

Thanks again, and take care all!
