i move my comp to another house now
using shure SM58 into ART tube preampinto GINA
though i increase every level possible the level is still too low to fight in a mix
input1/2 at gina is at 25
ART using phantom power and every knobs of it are around optimum ( 7-8 )
cos more of this the noise and hiss occurs rudely
i turnoff the airconditioner so the only noise source possible is maybe the comp
any advice on how to get more level?
thnx

Now this is really weird. The other day I read a post from someone that plugs his SM57
directly into the GINA analog input and says that works. It would seem to me (I don't have an ART pre) that you should be able to clip the converters on GINA quite easily with that preamp/mic combo. With my preamp I run the Input to GINA at 0dB (no boost)and set the preamp at nominal levels and generally get a nice fat signal. I've found that jacking up the input level on the GINA past +3dB adds noise to the recording. You've got it almost at the top (+26dB). Does the SM58 need phantom power? I thought that was a dynamic mic. Is your monitor channel set to 0dB (no cut)? The default is something like a 13dB cut.
With the mic getting boosted like that even the fan in the computer will sound very, very loud from anywhere in the room.
If you're having trouble with monitor levels turn down the other stuff. You are using headphones to isolate the track you're trying to record with the mics, right?

thnx yes the MON is odB
not quite understand about these console
i use 3.08 drive of gina and the mixer is different than present one
i push the phanton power button on ART but it never went red like when i plug gigasampler or other s/wsynth
yes i use headphone what do you mean by turn down other stuff?
other track?
BTW you also don't use mixer?
if so how you manage to hear both accompany tracks along with the vocal you record? convert the headphone jack into a stereo pair?
thnx again

Yes- No mixer other than the TASCAM Porta-07.
As for the volume in headphones; My pre-amp works as a splitter because it outputs digital (S/PDIF or AES/EBU; this I record) and analog simultaneously with separate volume controls. So I get a pre-mix to monitor while I record by running all tracks to my Portastudio and using the headphone out there.

Just to reaffirm the sm58 is dynamic and should supply plenty of signal.

The ART unit has low and high impedence (mic) and phono line out.
Come out of your phono out (line) 1/4 inch jack into the Gina. Will that help?

No the Sm58 is Dynamic. Does'nt need Phantom power.

Is your Windows sound system turned up all the way?

thnx for all replies
yes i managed to findout that
it doesn't need
phantom power
2things i don't understand about this Tube MP unit are
the 3 buttons between
input and output knobs
i think phantom is the far left one and what are the other?
the middle is marked with letters" Ppwr +48"
the far right is Phase reverse
what r they?
thnx again
you're all so kind

i think the GINA console control window sound system
is it right?

The switch marked "PPwr +48" is the phantom power switch (phantom power usually being 48 volts)

From left to right, the switches are

Left: +20dB gain switch - adds 20dB of gain to the signal. Push it and you'll see what is meant by that.

Middle: The phantom power switch (+48 volts)

Right: Phase Reverse - reverses the phase of the incoming signal (ie. inverts the signal 180 degrees).

I've had problems with 2 different SM58's not being able to get a hot signal. I really don't remember what was wrong but I had to send them off to get fixed....Just a suggestion/
