Well, eventually (summer time probably), Im gonna want to get a mixer so I can add more mics and whatnot. Now, it will work to plug a mixer into an Mbox2 right? Will it have each channel seperated onto pro tools?

And what do you think of these mixers (which would you prefer?)? Reccomend some too, up too $300.

Thanks!

with the Mbox you'll only be able to record 2 channels at the same time right? Unless you get a digital converter that has S/PDIF outputs, in which case that'll get you another 2.

Well, if you plug the mixer into the Mbox2, wouldnt that give you more channels???

To get separate channels into protools, you need separate outputs from the board. The first Peavy has no separate outputs for each channel. Really only has one set of outputs. So, you can only input one stereo pair into ProTools. Same with the Mackie. They're both designed for stage mixing, not recording mixing. They might make good DJ mixers, or podcast mixers. They're just not designed for recording work.

What are you looking to record now, and what do you see yourself recording later on down the road? Knowing this will give us the information needed to suggest some things to you.

if you're running a mixer into an m-box into protools, you'll still only be able to get 2 channels recorded onto your PC at a time by taking the main L/R outs off of the mixer

So, what would you do? I need to record a drumset, 2 guitars, a bass, and vox.....

Im wondering if I should ask my dad if i can return the Mbox and get something like the Alesis Multi-16 firewire.... What do you think? Will I be able to use the Mbox2 for what I want, or should i get something else???

If you get the Alesis unit, you won't be able to use it with Pro Tools. You have to use their hardware (or M-Audio hardware if you have PT M-Powered). If you're not married to the idea of using Pro Tools, then the Alesis may be the shot. If you have to use Pro Tools, then you're going to need to step up to the Digi 002 or Pro Tools M-Powered with a multi-channel interface.

well, i got pro tools with the mbox, so i would probly have to send it back anyways...

I really dont know what to do. What are some other ways (specific examples please), to record what i need (drums, 2 guitars, bass, vox). Like, other intefaces or something...

Well, depending upon you budget, if you wanted to go on the cheap, you could get Pro Tools M-Powered and an M-Audio Delta 1010 interface to use with it (roughly $500 total cost). That would give you the ability to record 10 (I think) different channels at once. So you could use 6 for drums, 2 guitars, 1 bass, and 1 VOX. Keep in mind, you'll need a PC powerful enough to record 10 channels of audio, but it could be done with that set up. Each instrument would record on seperate channels in Pro Tools and you could mix them until the cows come home. There are obviously more expensive ways to do this, but the option I listed would provide you acceptable quality if the rest of your gear is right.

Awesome, thanks for the recc. Ya, we just got a new computer, its nice, I think it should be able to handle it. Now, how to tell my dad that what he got me is not gonna work....

Which would be better, the Alesis Firewire 16, or the M-Audio Delta?

I like the looks of the Alesis for a few reasons. One is that I wouldnt have to buy a mixer, thats a plus. Two, it looks a lot simpler. And three, more channels. Is there anything really bad about it that I dont know??

Any last advice? Probably gonna make my decision today.

I dont understand that thing. Theres only two inputs, but then like 8 outputs. How does that work?

Ive also found out about the Presounus firepod. What do you think about this piece of equipment?

Im getting more open, but I only have a few days to decide, and no more than $600..

Please help me!
