HHB Radius 40, SPL Channel 1, or Symetrix 628

Does anyone have an opinion on the HHB Radius 40, the SPL Channel One, or the Symetrix 628? I'm interested in using one as my main vocal mic pre. I was looking at a dbx576 and came across these as other potential possibilities but have never heard of any of them and have no idea what reputation they have for sound quality, tonal characteristics, physical quality, etc ...

Any thoughts?

The HHB is a re-branded TL Audio - it will do you very well... I'd pick that unit first, SPL 2nd............

Only from recommendations by others whose opinions I trust!

TL Audio/HHB tube products have their own reputation that precedes me and doesn't require my stamp of approval - it is top-notch gear (with price to match!!!)

My local dealer was recommending SPL gear and I've since noticed many positive reviews regarding their gear overall...

I can't comment about Symetrix at all..........

Search Google for "HHB Radius 40" - you'll have plenty of reviews to look over....

Sorry I can't comment on usability from personal experience... your best bet is to get your local dealer to let you demo them at your studio (if you're a good customer or you're deciding on big ticket items, they shouldn't have a problem with this - if they won't let you, you need to find yourself a better dealer!!!)

There's a review...

Your post regarding the HHB got me looking. If you go to electronic musician's webset, the reviewed ti along woth several other pres in Sept 99.
 
This was a valuable review - got me thinking about the Focusrite Platinum VoiceMaster ....
 
Just to muddy the waters...

Some of the focusrite reviews have not been as glowing. SOS for example didn't particularly like it. I'll say again, based on your VC1Q experience, I would listen to the units before buying.

That was what sold me on the DBX units.
 
I've got a SPL Channel One at my house on a loaner for a couple of days that I'm going to check out. Next week I hope to get my hands on a Radius 40 for a couple of days. The SPL is a demo unit so the price difference between the two is around $400 - which makes the bar a little higher for the SPL.

So far the Channel One has impressed me with its ease of use [which to me is somewhat important] and, to my ears, very nice sounding preamp. I'm going to give it a bit more of a workout tonight.
