Hey Waldo,Sorry for not posting this on the NWR forum, but I cant remember my password for the forums(nor can I remember the answer to my hint, but anyway).
I was reading your response to a question regarding your policy for posting cover tunes, the gist being possesion of performance rights, and documentation there of.
I am working on an ambitious cover of a Pink Floyd song I was hoping to post on NWR.How can I go about obtaining the rights, and do I have to send you documentation upfront?
Thanx!

Put the disclaimer "For educational purposes only. Not intended for sale or distribution" or something to that effect with the posting. I took all my "cover tunes" off NWR a few weeks ago out of respect for Waldo and his enterprise "not the spaceship"

I think that may get you off the hook.

But I'm just guessing, WTF do I know?

Nope, educational rights do not extend to performance rights outside of an educational institution. Posting tracks on the net equates to performance rights...

ASCAP has a handy system called 'ACE' where you can search for artists works that are covered by some of their plans. I suggest getting in touch with your local ASCAP rep. about getting a license.

http://www.ascap.com/ace/search.cfm...&search_det=t,s,w,p,b,v&results_pp=30&start=1

You're lucky I caught this, I wouldn't have seen it if I didn't poke around tonight!

Well,I am glad to hear from you,but I wouldn't have tried to upload w/o your approval!
Thanx for the link, but the song isn't covered by ASCAP.It is on BMI's website, but I'm having a difficult time figuring out what the hell my responsibilities are.Hell,I'm just recording the song because it's challenging, and it's a meaningfull piece to me!At most I thought I might get a few listens before it dies out.I sure as hell aint gonna make any money off it!Whatever!
I'll see how much of a pain it's gonna be.My time is much better spent on my own shit. This is actually my first cover, and I fought the impulse to begin with(w/o success, obviously)!

Generally, the best thing to do is get a 'blanket' license. Which gives you access to the full catalogue that the organization covers.

So, for I think around $100 a year, you can 'legally' record, perform, and even sell cover tunes by all of ASCAPs catalogue, or all of BMI's, etc. etc.

Another way? Get in touch with the artist, or their management directly. Often takes more time, but you can often get 'free' permission/licenses from them if you get on good terms ;)

P.S., I think admin. for most of PF's stuff is:

THE RICHMOND ORGANIZATION

NEW YORK , NY, 10011
Tel. (212) 627-4646

Well, the song is "Dogs"from Animals.I wonder if Roger Waters is the better bet to get permision, rather than Dave Gilmore(who was not fond of the album!):D

Still C/O the Richmond Org., except

ESSEX MUSIC INTERNATIONAL INC
c/o same info above.

You're a fountain of music publishing trivia Waldo. Many thanx!

Do you think MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice would let me do cover
versions of their world-renowned and critically acclaimed classics?? How a bout Milli Vanilli!!??

These artists contributed some of the greatest music of our times and deserved to be recognized at NWR!!!

Tell me the truth Q,have you been drinking?Let me smell your breath!

MC Hammer has been rep'd by alot of people/

Earley Tunes Music out of California was one, Jobete Music Co. Inc. another, Kozmic Media (gilmer), Controversy Music, All Seeing Eye Music...

Anyways, ultimately UMG owns his ass. Check mp3.com for his crap.

Same with Vanilla ice, all over the map, although I think his ass is owned by EMI/Warner.

Rappers, DJ's, etc. can be hard to find out what parts of the song belong to who... Sometimes there is more than 30 people involved, all on different labels, and contacts and shit!

Milli Vanilli was a BMG blunder me thinks, product of Hollywood (Diane Warren I think is their cp admin...)

Q, I'd almost pay to hear (and see) you do some of this stuff, maybe parodies would be better ;)

p.s. parodies are the 'grey area' in performance rights. If you change it 'enough', but not too much, they can't touch ya ;)

Was Gilmore fond of any Floyd album?

He oughta be proud of "Animals"!To me,it's hands down his best work.
