I still find the Mic Encyclopedia idea with a single mic for reference, too subjective. I like darwin's idea; though I know there are a few hand-books that have attempted it... But on the net where info can be added, it's a great idea!
As for my homerecording.com, BUNCH of mics recording, on common HOME gear, it probably isn't a very god idea anyway. But, I just thought it MIGHT be useful for the TONS of people (most buying a mic for the 1st-3rd time or so) that say: "There is no pro audio shop for hundreds of miles and even then, there's no selection at the one pro audio place!" They then get on the net to shop blindly and there is TONS of mics to choose from and it becomes overwhelming for them... WAY too many options!
Well if there was a net source or CD (hell, I'd even burn and send them to people who would be interested in it, at cost) where they could listen to a bunch of these common mics recorded with gear they probably already have or is VERY similar in quality, it MIGHT help them get a VERY ROUGH IDEA of what it MIGHT sound like in THEIR home; where they could at least downsize the vast options out there!
So obviously, this would NOT be a "shootout" of ANY type at all! In fact, like I said, it would not be "technical" at all, simply "plug & play", like most people do at home!
By the way, I live on the edge of Sacramento, CA, on the otherside of the country as you Beez!
