I'm a vocalist.

I'm a college student so I am poor.

I want to record. I have some decent mics.

Since I have no money, what's the cheapest way to get good sound? All I have is a top of the line laptop, a nice stereo, all cables and attachments, and mics. what do I need. Please don't make me search, I'm tired of scouring forums for countless hours for an answer someone can type in two minutes. Thanks!

If you want the really short answer:

Walk over to the electronics lab at your school with your mic and your laptop and have a student make up whatever adapter you need to plug your mic into your laptop, probably a female XLR to male 1/8" TRS

Plug your mic in and hit record

What in heaven's name makes you think that the answer would only take two minutes, anyway?

We don't know make or model of your mics, so we don't know if they're dynamic, condensor, ribbon, or something 'creative' like USB (and the answer you are looking for would depend on the type of mic you have). We don't know if the connectors are XLR or TRS. We would need to know if your laptop has a firewire port, or just USB.

Jeez... kids! The assumptions!

And... incidentally... if you have a 'top of the line' laptop, you are... speaking demographically... hell and gone from being 'poor'.

cheapest way out....grab a small Behringer mixer from ebay for around 30 to 40 bucks. Plug your mic into the mixer, and left or right main out into your sound card with a TS cable. You will probably need an adapter to go into your sound card.
