Hey Muttley...

Not a technical question, but something thst I have been wondering about...

First off, I'm not sure what kind of music you are interested in, but do you find that you knowledge of instrument construction almost spoils your enjoyment of a) playing the guitar, and b) listening to music?

If, for example, you pick up an instrument, can you play it and enjoy it while putting technical observations aside? Or do you immediately notice the flaws that others may overlook or live with?

Similarly, when listening to a record, do you find yourself worrying about the instrument's tone, construction elements etc, or can you just enjoy the music?
 
If I was a good enough player maybe be it would but no not at all. Making listening and playing are all completely different pleasures.

I've met him a few times and talked guitars. I've sought his opinion on many things. Mostly at festivals and some shows. He is a very unique and talented guitarist, songwriter and performer with years of playing under his belt but he's right in the middle of the Lowden camp.

Yeah he was answering fan mail on his website, and someone wrote in explaining that he bought a second hand Lowden which he was told had once belonged to Richard. He asked Richard was this true, and the reply he got was that no, it wasn't Richards guitar, because he'd never part with a Lowden!

He has a "relationship" with them. Read that as you like :D Whatever he is not a bad endorsement and he like myself rate Lowdens very highly indeed..

Not going to tell you what my relationship is was/with Lowden. You've just come off ignore after the unsigned crass comments and neg rep you dumped on me. If your going to insult people at least have the common decency to sign it.

So why is it when I put you on ignore the neg rep goes away, Yet everyone else's kind words are there crystal clear for me to massage my ego with :confused: :D

I'm not really bothered about it in any case. I'm quite happy to shake on it and start again. It's more the unsigned insults than the neg rep. I don't give a damn about the rep points thing.
 
Thanks for the info Muttley. I reckon thath there is a dangerous line that can be crossed with music. When Joyce (that's James) was researching the siren chapter of Ulysses. he listened to so much music that he claimed he couldn't enjoy it as an art form anymore.

I was thinking that maybe it was the same with guys like Muttley who have so much time and effort invested in elements of music that they can't help approach it with an analytical mind.

It's entirely possible to listen to music on many levels. Also one of the joys for me is discovering new musicians. Always a pleasure. I really don't have trouble separating the disciplines.

Joyce was a very complex man as I understand it, hopefully I'm not in the same league as him in most regards. A genius all the same. I'm no genius just a well educated craftsman at best. :)

Thinking about it I do listen to a lot of talk radio these days :o
