Or anyone else that has some experience with cosmetic problems on guitar necks. I was playin last night and didn't realize that I had somehow cut the tip of my finger. I've got quite a mess on the fretboard and on the side of the neck. I wiped it off but the thing continued to bleed so being a trooper I just kept playing. Don't go and get a gore image going...it was just light but by the end of the night, the fret board got pretty stained. I tried to clean it up with a damp rag but no dice. It's a hard maple fret board on a maple neck unstained and unfinished.

Ideas? Someone suggested bleach but I surely don't want big white blotches either.

Of course, you could sand it a bit with some 320 (careful not to hit the frets, unless you want to polish them completely). You won't get rid of the stain, but it will probably feel fine, and then you have a bit of a story to go with your guitars.


You could also try some steel wool. Probably won't work, but it's worth a try.

Some people brag about playing untill their fingers bleed, next time you meet one just show them your blood stained fingerboard then ask to see their's.

I tried a bit of wool last night. Nothing really....well, thanks just the same.

you could try some of the "oxy" type cleaners though it may change the color of the wood. You might want to try it on a bit of scrap first and don't leave it on too long !

Or, you could use a stain and make the whole neck darker.

I wish I had a better story to tell...I had the smallest little yard working wound that just opened up...it's been a little sore for the last couple days and I must have dragged it on a fret or something.

The oxy stuff...great idea! I'll give it a whirl. At this point, it's just an appearance thing so it's not like the end of the world. Thanks all.

just sand, bleach, and stain the wood

or buy a new neck

try h2o2 (peroxide)

soak a cloth or paper towel with it

and lay it over the stain for several minutes at a time

replenishing as necessary

(you should see some frothing and bubbling initially)



might discolor the wood though

(but no worse than blood stains)

so try it on a small area first

Screw it. Bloodstained guitars are teh rawk anyway.

Next time, at least tung oil the neck. If the blood soaked in there so easily/permenantly, imagine what else will, and how that might affect the longevity of the neck.

K so...like I was shreddin kinda light...'bout 450pbs or so. I went to flick my pick out into the awe struck croud and I cut my self on it because I use these custom aluminum razor blade sharp ones and I slashed a big gaping wound into my fingers. Since it was such a surgical cut, it didn't hurt that much so I kept shreddin', eventually the extra deep full scallop job on the neck started to get to me so I had to stop and change strings...the Extra Heavy 12-52 strings were getting to me especially during the super wide vibratos and string bends. I almost slipped during one of my big back flips off the monitors when I landed in the still wet pool of blood.

I went to the doc afterwards and got a couple (15 ) stitches on my finger tips. It should heal in a month or so if I lay off the practicing.
