This is the shit I've acquired recently. I originally wanted a small, low-watt home recording head/cab set up, and ended up with a Marshall halfstack. :laughings:

Special thanks to Lt Bob for his help and guidance. He kind of nudged me along on my quest for tone. :listeningmusic:

Diamond Assassin 18w tube head
Avatar 2x12 w/ Celestion Vintage 30's
Marshall JCM 900 2500 MkIII
Marshall Lead 1960a w/ Celestion G12T-75's.

Noice. What do you think of that Avatar?
I've been lusting after one of those for my Bassman.

Thanks! Now I just need to learn how to play......

That is always the crux of the problem isn't it. lol

I'm trying to get a legit kit this year... and I won't be able to play it very well. haha

So I know the feeling.

lol@ 1960a cab ....... I'm sitting here laughing my ass off at how you tried to avoid getting what turned out to be the 'inevitable rig'!

:laughings:

So now you have two guitar rigs ..... either of which any guitar player would lust for!

Congrats mang.

:)

How do ya' like those G12T's as opposed to the V30s?
The difference in cabs might make it hard to directly compare them though.

I don't know what to think about the Avatar. I mean, I like it, but I got away from myself in all the excitement of buying new shit. The build quality, appearance, fit and finish, and delivery time is all extremely excellent. This thing is solid as a tank and beautifully put together. It got here fast too. The cab itself is kind of thin though. Like, it's walls are thin. This thing is really resonant. You can actually hear the cab come to life as you crank the volume on the amp. This could be good or bad - depending on what you want. I found it to be a little troublesome and I struggled to record it decently. No matter where I put the mic, it sounded too fat for my liking. My best tones from the Avatar cab came with the mic a good 6 inches to a foot off the grill. The back of the cab is closed, but it has a conversion panel that can be removed to make it an open back. I never tried it though. Open backed may be all this cab needs to bleed off some of the earth shaking from a high powered amp. The Diamond head I've paired with it is only 18 watts, but those are loudest most powerful 18 watts I've ever encountered. I think Diamond lied. This little amp has to be more than 18 watts. I's a screaming beast. It's considerably louder and punchier than any of the heads I tried with similar wattage. Anyway, lower-to-moderate volume clean tones sparkle beautifully from this cab, but I rarely ever use lower volume clean tones. I bet with a Fender or a Vox head, this cab would sound killer. I think the Vintage 30's with the resonance of this cab would make for stellar clean tones. Avatar makes beefier stuff though and their customer service is excellent. They get rave reviews from every source I've seen. Don't write them off just because I probably got the wrong cab for the job I'm trying to do.

A drummer with a nicer amp than me???? What up wit dat? Tube amps are deceptive. I got a Rivera that's 20 watts and it'll make you bleed from your ears.

That's very true. I told you from the get-go that I want Marshall sound, and I danced around like a retard trying to get that sound with all the wrong stuff. It was a fun experiment though. Without even trying, I stuck a mic on this cab and got a tone that's more my style than anything I got with the other head or cab. I guess this was the inevitable end result. :laughings:

In the Marshall cab, I love the G12T's. It's the sound I expected and my ears wanted to hear. There's nothing special about this head or cab - it just sounds like a Marshall, which is what I always wanted. I can't make a very fair comparison to the V30's in the Avatar because I think the cab is wrong for a high powered amp. But....through my bandmates Mesa and Diamond 4x12 cabs, both of which are fitted with V30's, it sounds very good. The sound is definitely different, but still good. I think the V30's in his 4x12 are a little more active in the mids with less low and high end. The G12T's are more robust in the lows and highs, but more scooped in the mids. The V30's have a punchier sound, the G12T's have a smoother, more balanced sound. This is all just my own observation based off my head and playing. Someone that can actually play may get them to act differently. This is why I'm thinking the two would go together awesomely in the same cab. It's like they compliment eachother. I could be wrong though. I'm gonna try it and see.

I'd be very interested in that.

I really liked the idea of it being so lightweight. I have the Bassman going through the smallest of my Ampeg bottoms right now which is still like 120 lbs of meh. And I'm getting to the age where I don't feel like lugging heavy shit any more.

I bet opening up that back would help it breathe like you said.

It's pretty light. Probably like 50 pounds or so. I'm not sure. I'm a stud and have the power of a thousand men, so I can lug it around one handed, but you could probably manage it just fine too.

Thanks guys.

Capt Hair - total price for all of that was about 1500.

Geeze I think my JCM900 plus cab was around $2400 new... I think I've seen them for $1200 on eBay...:D

Thanks. :)

Ido, I paid 600 for the JCM900 head, and 275 for the cab.
