Hey guys and gals... newbie here looking for some advice

Hey guys!! I'm just now wanting to seriously get into recording, and, since I can't record a set, I would like to get a synth for drums. Now, I'm not just going to get it for drums, I would really like to learn, and plan on learning, how to play piano/keyboard. I am seriously considering going into MTSU's Recording Industry Major. Anyways, what would you all suggest for a good beginner's synth, if there is one, for around $400? I'm looking for something I can use with Pro Tools for recording various things and something to learn keyboard on. If anyone knows of any links to some basics of synths and the like, please post it. Thanks in advance!!

Please provide more details and please be more specific. If you want to learn keyboards and also use it for recording you can get many Keyboard synths. Just visit guitarcenter and they have a lot of stuff for that price range you are looking. Let us know ;)
 
Hey AMT, thanks for posting. I had given up on this post. :) I really don't know what else to say. heh. So... I'll just ask this. What are your personal opinions on a synth. What are some things I should look for that would help in recording? Or any other advice on synths would be greatly appreciated. I have NO idea where to start. Thanks again for your reply. Well, people probably did not reply because you were not specific enough. Anyway, here is some stuff.

I do not have a keyboard synth, but I got a digital piano with MIDI capablity. I also got a Roland synth module(JV1010) to generate the synth sounds.

Since you want to learn piano, and that too with a budget of $400.00 it might be hard to get an 88 key full size for that range.

Here is my suggestion for recording:
Get a cakewalk software program like SONAR or Guitar studio ($130 - $225). This will give all the sounds you need including drums through your sound card. Just make sure you have a SOUNDBLASTER soundcard ($30.00).

Suggestion for synth:
As for the keyboard to learn, you might have to extend your budget a bit, or get something used on EBAY. Try to get a full size (88 key) synth or piano. If you are still tight on a budget then get something like a 64 key, which you can get for under $400.00. Like I mentioned before visit guitarcenter. They have a wider range of selection. Just tell them what you want and they can help I am sure.

With the software and the soundcard and a piano, you can do wonders.

OOPs sorry i failed to see that you already got protools. So forget the cakewalk software.

Are you using protools through a soundblaster card? How are you generating your sounds?
 
Hey AMT!! Thanks again for the replies. I'll see if I can make a trip to GC. You can get soundblaster live! 5.1 cards for about $33 (Including shipping) on Z-buy.com, so I'll probably get one of those soon. Just ordered a burner today, heh, so it may be a little while. I might even get an Audigy (I'm a computer geek... I build them and with the money I get from building them, I buy more stuff for my own... it works :)). I'll go check out Ebay either in a few minutes or later tonight. As far as Protools goes, I've just got ProTools FREE and I've only used it for putting my youth pastor's sermons on sunday night on my comp and editing them a little bit. We're going to start selling them to raise money soon and I'll be the engineer. :) How much of an engineer, I don't know, lol, but I think I make it sound a LITTLE better. :) Anyways, I'll check out Ebay and, hopefully, GC. My current sound card is a Sound Blaster 16, but that 16 means 16 sounds, I believe... heh. Not sure. When I first built my comp, my parents gave me a limited budget and LIVE cards weren't down yet, soooo... Anyways, thanks again for your help. Are there any electronic features I should look for in a synth? Thanks muy muchos for your help. :)

I liked the soundblaster LIVE. Then I upgraded to M-audio. As for electronic features, I can't think of any. If you are using software to record, then you actually don't need any special features on synths. The software will be your synth.

You can also check www.musiciansfriend.com before going to GC. This is their official website. It's a very good site, I always research there before I go yo GC. It will also give the the prices.
You can also get SBLive at bestbuy. So there you go....
