Dot, about a month or so ago you said something about waiting on a Nady 1050. I was just wondering whatever became of that?

The most interesting thing about that mic is the 3 micron... wonder if they pulled it off or if its fucked... probably fucked... SP is about the only one thats supposed to be able to do it well enough to make them consistent... chances of ever making a stereo matched pair of the Nadys are probably slim.

never happened

cnote, I was suppose to get a 1050 for a try-out from a friend – here was the email I received from him:

About the Nady TCM 1050 - bad news, for me, I'm afraid, here's the story: I tried to order one when they were first out (about 5 months ago),and was told there was a waiting list. I finally got mine (about 3 and 1/2 months ago) and couldn't get any signal out of it at all. I thought it was defective,
and sent it back. AMS said they had 2 more and would send me a new one
immediately (this is about the time you let me try the C1). Turns out,
their computer was messed up, and they didn't have any, so I got put on
the waiting list again. The new one came this Thursday. Same thing - no
signal. I called Nady because I figured it must be me, but they said I
was doing everything fine, so I called AMS to return it AGAIN! The tech
support at AMS said that on the last one, all they did was switch the box
from 220 to 110v and it worked perfectly! I tried it on the new one, and
sure enough, it worked (I still don't know why Nady would send it pre-set to 220 if the normal house outlet is 110). Now that I had a signal, I went to set the mic up, and the shockmount doesn't fit properly! So I had to send it back again anyway!! All of this has left a bad taste in my mouth, so I just had
them credit my card and NOT send a new one. As far as sound goes, the Nady sounded pretty cool. It was warm and clear. Yet, I will say it had a somewhat strange quality to it, and I doubt you would like it. SO that's the long story of why I don;t have one to send you, but I'm sure there will be
other stuff to try down the line. Again, thanks for letting me try the
C1, and let me know. Later.

Nady TCM

My 2 cents...

I bought a TCM 1100 and for the price I think that its great.
Its warm, has good response...If I had the jack for a Nueman,
I would have bought one, For anyone with a tight budget I highly reccomend the TCM 1100.

Hey tubedude (or anyone else)- Whats the big deal about getting a uniform 3 micron film of sputtered gold. I don't make mic diaphragms, but I do gold sputtering for semiconductors. Its relatively easy, with decent equipment, to get a 3000 Angstrom (3 micron) film with excellent uniformity (+/- 1% for sure). In fact, 3 microns is actually quite a bit thicker than a lot of the films deposited in my industry. Maybe it has something to do with the substrate (mylar), but I would think a thinner film would be easier since it you would be subjecting it to less heat. Or it could be that the mylar outgasses in the vacuum system. Any ideas. Maybe I should go ask SP at recording.org.

3 microns

Hello Everyone

I could be mistaken but, I believe that the total thickness, including the mylar subtrate and the sputtering would be 3 microns. the gold sputtering would of course have to be quite a bit thinner than 3 microns. the mylar would also have to be thinner making it more fragile and trickier to properly tension the diapham. The big thing here is to try and reduce the mass of the diapham as much as possible. Low mass = fast response. I picked one of these mics up nast week on a whim. It was used, it was cheap, it was returnable. I took a good long look at the capsule to check for wrinkles. It didn't seem to have any. so I thought " what the heck" I've tried it out on three sessions (2 vocals 1 ac guitar). The first session was a male vocal. I wasn't very impressed. It seemed rather dark and noisy. A quick test and I found the the 6072 ( china? russia? ) didn't test well. I have a bunch of old 6072 ge 5 star tubes in my parts bin and I put one in. This seemed to help quite a bit. My overall impression in that like many chinese mics the high end is rather hyped. after the tube change I used it as the side mic in a M/S pair on an acoustic guitar. I worked very nicely for that, I used a neuman km184 for the mid. Later that session I used it again for a male vocal. this singer has a low rich voice but he likes to try a push his range up. this tends to bring an edge to his vocals. He in fact tries often to sing outside his range but thats a different story. I found the mic a little too bright for what he was doing. I tried a modded octava mk319 and liked the extra mids for what he was doing. I would be curious to hear other peoples impressions of this mike.
