Great post! I've been having so much trouble with my mixes. I get them sounding great in my Sony headphones and when I play them in my car they sound absolutely awful. I'm embarrassed to even play them for people. I know I need to quit using my headphones and get some monitors. So what's a good set off monitors to start off with?

Doesn't matter what speakers you get so long as you learn what other mixes sound on them. Just get some cheap ones to start with. Don't aim too high priced yet, you'll just be disapointed.

re suggestions for "starter" monitors, it depends on a number of things: your budget, your personal preference, your room. Do a search here on "monitor" and you'll get TONS of info. I got the JBL LSR25P's, (which go for around $500/pr). I would not suggest you "just get anything", as you'll be wasting money you could have put towards good monitors in the first place!
There are some good deals out there! Look around, search the archives, find some that look like they'd suit your needs, then find a store that'll let you hear them. Bring your fav cds, and a few of your own stuff if you can, to see what they sound like.
