:)

Nice feel... my opinion, the vocals need a little more air, more presence or something, a tad more up front. Prolly all comes back to the converters/pre-amp thing... good song.

Very nice, ametth. That's one hell of a break at 2:00, and the keys were a bit too pronounced for my taste, but like I said-very nice. What equipment did you use?

I don't mind most of the mud I get from recording to tape, but man, I sure would like to get drums like that.

Yeah, I heard something on that recording I'd sure like to beat... :D (you GOTTA send me a pic, Ametth)

BTW, that file you sent, with all the "right" in it? WRONG FILE!!! (no wonder!). D/Led it from your link, much better... let's pick it to bits now that it's in stereo...

The first thing I notice is that WinAmp won't show me a picture of that wonderful woman behind the mic NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES I CLICK ON "VISUALIZATION"!!! A bug, I'm sure.

Breathy voice. Like it. Lots. 'Cept it gets lost on occasion behind the spike-driven piano.

Okay. Just ONCE let the piano part roll UP instead of bouncing down to that solitary note (and then jumping back up for the final trebley phrase).

Play that piano part over and over to a mix you make without that repeated piano part. The emotive human aspect of you playing it will keep it from seeming repitious (and you can work the dynamics as the song needs it).

I really like your new stuff, Ametth. Can't wait for you to post your handywork again!

great song ametth. I love the singer's voice. Kind of reminds me of a cross between Bjork and the chick from Portishead. What's your role in the music/production? This is really nice. Smooth and sexy.

I'm not qualified to make any technical critique on this one...

By the way don't listen to Kelly on the piano thing! Maybe on the spike thing, I don't know I'm not viewing the wave, but the melody sounds great. He got all worked up over the singer and he's not right in the head. Never trust a guy with a hard on.

I've listened to this about 40 times now. I think it's the best thing I've heard from you, and I think it's the sweetest thing I've heard in the clinic in a good long time.

Listening again I can see how the piano sounds a little loud...but it kind of has to be. When it makes the change at 1:16 and the second change at 1:30 there's a great sense of relief that would be lost if the piano was buried. I also don't want to hear the vocals come up at all. This isn't Celine Dion crap. This song is moody and depressing....and she sings it appropriately. In fact the repetitiveness of the piano and guitars helps drive the depression. I also don't hear the piano part as being a sample...it sounds like it's played live to me, though I could be wrong.

I'd also like to point out that your songwriting here is more than excellent. This is in caliber with a lot of sonic youth with an almost mazzy star twist (except it doesn't grow old as fast).

To be honest, I feel that the recording is up to par with professional recordings of this genre. PJ Harvey, Sonic Youth, Cowboy Junkies...this is not standard pop and a standard pop recording would be inappropriate.

I think that my very favorite thing about this number is the way that ride sounds through headphones....it's like baby oil man. This thing is also very very wide. When I listen to my own recordings, even the ones I like, the first thing I usually notice is that they seem small and almost mono, regardless of the fact that I pan a lot of instruments hard. This recording completely surrounds without sounding like it's trying to.

You know, I like almost everything I hear in the clinic here....mostly because I respect everyone and enjoy sharing in their creativity. However, it is a rare day to find something that sounds like a finished product that I would actually purchase. I hope the rest of the stuff you do with the latest incarnation of your band is this good.

Thats a great arrangement of a great song.....very good mix....awesome job, ametth.......

Loved the tune. Can't comment too much on the mix, but even through my currently impaired hearing I can say that the vox has to come up a tad. I know this is gonna be difficult 'cause she's already peaking the mix in spots. As for that "spikey" (reverb fed) piano: Mikey Likes It! It doesn't need to be that loud all the time but that kind of presence does feed the ambience in places where nothing else is going on. You know I love the dissonant aspects that convey some mood. Nice transition at 3:30 where some feedback building resolves to a clean break. That tremolo electric guitar seems to work here.

WOW!

Beautiful work. Really - this is a great tune. The performance is solid on every level, and the mix is great.

The only thing I would really like to hear (for my own taste) is a really up front, present vocal track. The vox are great, and this would be amazing with one of those vocal tracks that just startles you with how close it sounds sometimes. (I am drawing a blank on a commercial recording to reference - I'm thinking Jeff Buckley's album Grace...) That might require equipment that is out of your (and my) means, but I'd like to hear it anyway. Ask Sjoko if you could borrow is Mag-mic and that matching preamp. ;)

Thanks for the kind words everybody.

Kelly: That piano is not a sample, I actually played it the whole time.

rats: This was recorded in my studio. This is my band.

tubedude: In hindsite, I wish we had used a different mic for the vox. This was a rush job to get a demo done. Your right.

Kelly (oh yeah): your a perv.

oh yeah..

Since this demo will actually see the light of day (unlike the last one), I will send a copy to whomever would like one. Just send me your address.

great tune,

sorry, I thougt that the piano was a cheap sample.

Like everybody else, I love the vocals, and the clear sound in general.

THe kick is way cool. It sounds nice. THe bass is cool too.

I think you need to add more reverb to the vocals, the guitars and the piano and put them in a slightly bigger room to add that polish.

cool man

Yeah, good sound, but then you *are* a gear snob. :D

What I like best about this one is the song itself - it's very Portishead, but it's like Portishead suddenly turned into a band that liked playing. Portishead never let themselves out of the bottle. This song does let itself out of the bottle at some points, and it's really enjoyable listening.

That rush of sound at 3.15 or thereabouts is nice... seemed a bit out of context, maybe... no that's not right - the sound seemed a bit muddled for this mix, dunno. The vocal without reverb makes it desolate - I like that. I'd like the vocal more clearly delineated - I'd like to hear the words more clearly defined - I bet that's the mic issue, right? The piano isn't too loud on the second or third listening. What a cool fucking song.

Awesome ametth,

One of the best in quite a while. Great song, arangement, and recording.

Very high quality.

Great to hear from you again!!!

Thank you everybody!! I really appreciate all the feedback.

Just to clarify, this is one of five songs on the demo..so if you would like a copy of the demo, just email me.

Hey Ammeth...

Liked the tune alot.
I enjoyed the changes, and the music was quite creative. I thought the piano level was just fine, considering it was the main "hook" throughout the tune.
Now that piano is stuck in my head...

Thanks.

That must make it difficult to get teeshirts and stuff on, Dougie.

This is really really really really really really good. I triple checked the bit-rate on the MP3 the first time I listened since it was hard to believe it's only 128kbps. I think the vocs are clear as a bell and work great... what mic and pre didya use?

I thought the piano was sample too... I think it has something to do with the natural decay vs. the reverb in the beginning. But it's 128kbps and encoding probably clobbered some of the nuances. Did I mention that this is really really really really really good?

This is nice stuff. Many transistions throughout, keeps it interesting, excellent song. That low bass stuff is cool, must be tuned low, 5 string? Like others have said, vocals could be a touch louder. The odd snare hit sticks out a bit, thought it was a touch loud overall.

Great Job!
