...happier than you.
So... I'm recording the tracks for a CD that our youth group is working on. It's a "big deal" type thing.. we're using a "real" studio and all that jazz... so anywhoo... I'm supposed to have four days to record the tracks (12 songs.).. actually 3 evenings (5pm till whenever) and all day Saturday...

well... because of aboslutely awful planning on the part of certain people.. (who will remain nameless... mainly because even if I did name them, it wouldn't make a lick of difference to any of you.. :p ) the studio was not "booked" properly and I ended up with two days... to do 12 songs. And I didn't even get two full days.. I got Weds. night and Saturday morning. Needless to say,.. I wasn't too happy with the circumstances and I had to force out a couple tunes in a hurry and wasn't altogether happy with the results....

but hey.. such is life...

In any event... this is where you're saying... "So get to the point already"... :p Well,.. I came home last night, totally exhausted after laying drum tracks for 8 songs in one morning, and bummed that I didn't get to do as good of a job as I wanted to,... and I needed some "therapy" to lift me from my "funk"... so I recorded this...

It's a cover of a Del Amitri Song (who?..) yeah.. I know.. you've never heard of them.. that's OK.. they rock anyway.. :p It's one of my favorites by them...

I'm throwing out the "initial" work... I'm gonna tweak it a little more and my bro (one of the evil people who forced me into hard-labour yesterday ;) ) is gonna come over and lay some BGV's for it... so you can hear the finished version later... I woulda added some percussion.. but... well.. I don't have any... :p and they (Del Amitri) use a bunch of other stuff on the song (like accordion) but all I gots is me guitar... so you get the barebones version.. :p

By the by,... I was gonna hold off on any recording till I get my new pre.. but obviously I had to do this... and so this is the first "listen" of what my new "sound" is like after "dramstically" improving my gear. (two new mics). You can totally tell the difference bewteen this song and my old ones. The git is now being mic'ed with an Oktava MC12 and the vocals are done with my C-1... and boy is it ever an improvement.

anywhoo... hope you like it... if you don't.. oh well.. I feel much better after having made it... :D

WATYF's NWR site. The song is called "Tell Her This".

Yeah, you have that tone to your voice. Almost Aaron Neville, too. :p Very nice guitar playing there. Recording sounds good. One of the musicians here, for sure

First off...you are HARDCORE! To spend all morning on 8 songs, and then to go home and record for fun. If my patience didn't kill me, my girlfriend would.

Nice sounding acoustic...Ooooo...Sweet vocal. What a great voice! And nice STRONG melodies too. Great lyrics too! Man this is smooth. What feeling!

Only thing I can find to maybe check out is the acoustic sound just just a smidgeon boomy on my monitors. Maybe just a touch, but they sound nice and full at the same time. Maybe back it off around 200Hz?

Nice job...LOVELY song!

I've heard of Del Amitri. My roomate had their first album and used to play it a lot back in the late 80's. I think they had a semi hit in the mid 90's. I remember a video with babies or something. Too bad they're in the "where are they now" file.

Great recording and performance. Your guitars are oh so sweet sounding. My only criticism (and it's very slight) is that the vocals are a tad harsh in the upper mids. Could be a compression thing or more likely my speakers.

Nice!

this i svery nice im listening right now....i hear dave mathews in this....these are the kind of lyrics i love...not so vague...say what you mean..love it...guitar is sweet sounding too...i like it as a whole....but im no engineer by any means will leave that input to those who can do it

awesome song!!.

Good job, no crits here!;)

Thanks all... I am looking for mixing tips.. my bro is over and he's gonna lay down some BVG's (hopefully) and then I'll remix.. I thought the acoustic might have been a little boomy too... I still use cheap, crap Altec-Lansing PC speakers (with subwoofer) so they give a very deceiving low end... next purchase is gonna be near-fields.

Yeah.. they had a measly hit in the 90's... ("Roll to Me".. the one with the babies in the video) but it was their cheesiest song.. :p I can think of a bunch of their other stuff that I'd much rather hear on the radio (this song being one of 'em).

And the high-mids may very well be the compression.. I'm not happy with any of the compressor plug-ins that I have right now... (all cheap freebies) so if anyone knows of a good compressor plug-in that doesn't cost much (read "free") :p then let me know...

Ya, I had some Altec 200W, then they kicked it, and I replaced with Klipsch. Then I finally monitors...you will sleep more easily when you have them. :p

Very nice job with Altecs!

Del Amitri's a great band and I do hear this song on the radio frome time to time.

Nice cover, I was singing along with ya. Git sounds really nice, maybe too upfront. I gotta get my Taylor sounding this full when tracking!

I dig on your voice. I'm hearing the harshness jjtcorsair mentioned too.

Nice job so far.

Theron.

Well.. the new mix is up... my bro did some BGV's and I messed with some stuff.. tried to take the "boom" out a little..

the problem is... I've always mixed on my headphones (Sony MDR-V600's) and then I just mix down to mp3 and see how it sounds on my Altecs... but I'm sick of having to wait for the mix down (and conversion) just to hear how it sounds, so for this re-mix, I set n-Track to run through the speakers (I had to uninstall my on-board sound and mess with a couple other things... but it's much easier this way)...

anywho... let me know of any other stuff I should mess with.

P.S.. I think I found a new compressor to use.. so I'll prolly get rid of that harshness soon...

You don't think those are too much, do ya??

just makin' sure... This is my first tune with BGVs.

WATYF

Naw....but I think your "Taylor sound" got stale waiting around for the additional bg tracks.
