Here's a song of mine, years of work in it.

It's a song that I consider one of my best.
It's really old fashioned - no bridge, mostly a 3 chorder.
The title phrase has been used at least 3 other times in songs in this century.
The subject matter is well-trodden - a divorce/I have to leave you song.
It is exactly v/c/v/c solo(!)c/v.
The words rhyme, more or less.
The song says exactly what I want it to, and I'm happy with it.

But obviously I am biased. Does anybody think it's TOO cliched? TOO old-fashioned to work. It's a modest song with modest ambitions, and I hope there is a place for that, in some small corner of this post-modern world.

Dream a little dream, Just dream the night away,
Dream a little dream, Dream the world away,
And all we ever had,
Slowly drifts away, Dream a little dream,
Dream the night away,

With all I ever had, I just wanted more,
With all that I had, had to try for, more

Dance a little dance, dance the world away
Dance a little dance, close your eyes and sway,
Oh the musics fine, sit back, just let it play
Dance a little dance, dance the world away,

Chorus

Dream a little dream, just dream the past away,
Dream a little dream, close your weary eye,
Open them and find, That I have gone away,
All you ever wanted, And me away

This is a reduction from a full band arrangement with back-up singers. Tried to suggest as much of the song as possible with as few instruments as possible. But it does need the drums and backing vocals. And a fiddle instead of my minimalist solo!

Hi Eric,

Downloaded your tune-----nice piece of work.

Excuse my predjudice, but I could see a real nice horn arrangement with trombone taking the fills ala' Leon REdbone
on this one-----would come out like some of Ian Tyson's later
tunes.....

I hadn't thought of brass,

But that would certainly work.

In the old band arrangement, it was a fox-trot type number, with standard country-rock type sound - drums, 2 electric guitars, bass, back-up singing... you know.

But I like the Leon Redbone idea - I could hear a tuba on the bass...
But I really don't know much about arranging brass - nothing in fact.

Always liked what Van does with it though - especially on the Moondance record, and REALLY like the sound of A Period Of Transition.

If you want to do some collaboration, I'm into mailing CD's back and forth - it'd be the easiest way, I think. You can use the 'profile' button for website and email information, if you're into it.
