here's a demo of "stairway to heaven recorded by a 13 year old!

i recorded this demo a few months ago in my home studio. i played all the instruments. i recorded all of it on a fostex vf-16 recorder and mastered it in guitar tracks 0.2 software and encoded it to an mp3 in cakewalk pyro.

the guitars was recorded direct. the bass amp(tnt-100) was miced with a beta 52. the drums was recorded with 4 mics. 1 overhead(nady scm 900) placed over the (drummers)left crash about 2' up in the air. a snare(sm57) was placed close to where the stick hits the rim. 2 kick drum mics. 1(some old v-tech) was placed outside the bass drum hole(6'') about 1'. and the beta 52 was placed inside the bass drum on the bottom about 2" from the back head.

all the effects came from the vf-16 and i used no compression.

Keep in mind this is just my opinion and I am very new to recording but here goes. The drums sound weird like they are being gated off quickly with an audible "thud/click". Could even here it when you clicked the sticks. Very strange and annoying. The guitar lead sounded good though.
 
thanks. i did'nt gate the drums but it does sound like it. i think that it is an effect of whats called: data compression. what this does is compress data so it can be the same time just in a smaller size. like the file that i recorded, if it was a wav file it wound be 15mb. but sence it's a mp3 it's 1.4mb. you see. i do have the option of cd-quilty mp3s. it just makes the file bigger.

yeah. that sounds good. what do you use to encode your mp3? i have an idea! you see, i don't have the internet at my home so i go to my towns library and use there computer. so i have to convert the song to an mp3 then hope that it's not to big and i put it on a little 3x5" 1.44mb disk. then i bring it to the library and upload it on the internet. i will be getting a cd burner soon so i should beable to put some cd-qulity mp3s on a cd.
 
I use wavelab for encoding. I would think that cakewalk would do a good job too.

Maybe the guitar was a little bit out of tune.... Probably work on rhythm a little bit. Try using a click track?

i live in ga. mabye the guitars where out of tune but i used the same old guitar for all the guitar tracks.

Oh and.. Go easy on him, remember he's only 13....We shouldn't be expecting a Roger Nichols, or Mutt Lange production....

waldo and i are clearing that up right now as we speak. he says that i have 2 acounts there. and that's true. but i did not know that it wound lead to this. heck, the only reson that i had 2 acounts was because i forgot the name and password to one of them. so, i just made a new one. but anyway waldo should have my acount back on-line by tomorro some time.

i'm sorry. i did'nt see that you also live in ga. i live in hart co. it's right next to the sc state line.
 
i know! (i really did'nt know that intro at that time.) i recorded this about 2 months ago. but i know it now. and i a'm planning a session.

I thought that the drums came out great. I could hear the "gate" effect but still they sounded great almost like you were triggering samples. Bravo! Guitar definately sounds out of tune and the song drifts out of beat a few times but great effort. You are going to make a fine engineer.
 
dude, really good.
the hi-hat is a little too loud in the mix, but i think everything else about the drums sounds pretty good. i would definetly recomend using a click track next time.
that ride sounds really sweet, what is it??

IT WAS A CAMBER ride! camber can't make s***t when it comes to crashes but they make a good ride.

sounds like your off to a good start. I thought that "Come together" sounded alot better than the stairway cover but they were both good efforts. When you say you recorded the guitars direct, do you mean your just plugging straight in with no type of amp simulator? Im assuming this is what your doing because your guitar tone is harsh sounding to me. Just my opinion, mic your amp or see about using some amp simulation would improve your recording even more.
