hey guys, thanks to everyone thats been giving me advice on my drum stuff

heres a little clip of the raw unmixed uneq'd uncompressed drums (single kick track not doubled ;) )

its a live recording i did with my friend so you will here some guitar thru the overheads and my playing was also a bit sloppy so im kinda embarrased to post it up but here goes!

am i doing anything right? am i doing anything wrong? what do you think of the raw sound?

heres the link :

Give it some time, dude. You only posted a few hours ago. People work. I'll listen when I get a chance later.

Dude that aint that bad. You can't work with that? Kick seems plenty there to me. I think it's tuned a little tight, but you can definitely work with those tracks. How are the overheads set up? They sound kinda weird. That sounds like a whole lot of close mic'ing and not much overheads.

It's hard hearing it out of context, but the thing that jumped out at me was the kick drum. It sounds way less present than the snare. The cymbals also lack definition, but I'm not so sure. Can you post the whole mix so we can hear it in context as well?

ye sure, ill do that tomorrow

there isnt really a "whole mix" as its just the drums and my mate on guitar

just a rough live take of some song he wrote so we could see how it sounds

the way i set my overheads up is like this, i did the method where you take a line thru the snare and kick and set the overheads up equidistant from this "line"

supposed to give a good stereo image of the kit. they arnt set too high as i dont have an ideal room so yeah, i guess a bit of cymbal is lost. it doesnt help that my cymbals are sooooo so so fucked. chunks missing from one and lotsa cracks in the other. when i crash my ride i think it sounds great tho. but that cymbal is perfect :)

Wish my drums sounded like that, my room SUCKS. And my playing isn't as tight as I would like it to be of course...
What padding have you got in your kick? I'm guessing quite a bit.

Fuck, me and Greg have been echoing each other all day, but that's pretty much what I hear. It sounds good...Certainly something you can work with. But the overheads must be a little weird, because the panning is a little funky.

so its not just the weak crashes? my crashes are weak from all the damage they've taken.

ill try post a photo of how ive set up my overheads later

If you use a Windows Media Player, open up the cheesy EQ in there and pull some 125 and 250 out while the clip is playing and listen to the kick clean up. No boosting or duplicating required.

RAMI, you're completely wrong, doubling a track is the same as turning it up you buffoon!

But if you use a delay your kick can be 8 Times Fasterdings

(I hope you guys have fonejacker or the whole joke is ruined)

Alright, time for questions.

A. What kind of mic are you using for the kick?

B. Where do you have it place/positioned?

C. What kind of beater are you using?

It sounds to me like the raw drum sound is pretty good, you just need to add some presence. It's best to try and do that without all the destructive EQing. It sounds like you need more attack. It's either due to a poor microphone or maybe it's not pointed at the right spot. A harder beater might help.

Some suggestions before resorting to EQ:

Tape a quarter to the spots where the beaters impact.

or...

Put a full can of paint on the pillow in the middle of the shell, or a cinder block vertically. It'll give it a little more punch.

You just have to EQ the kick. Take out some lower mids (somewhere around 200hz to 500hz) And add a boatload of high shelf and some 2k to 5k for the attack. Send that through a compressor.
