I can't get my MR-8s' input B to work except on the right side of channels 5/6 and 7/8 (I guess that would be channels 6 and 8).
I get a peek light when I crank it, but no signal. The meter remains flat regardless of incoming levels or the mr8s input level. I have tried both the XLR and the 1/4 inch to no avail.

I hope this is just another O.F.U. (operator phuck up), and I didn't fry something! Somebody please be my Mr./Mrs. obvious!

Thanx!

Sounds like a loose connection....I would advise to not open the unit...contact fostex first...

Try using the external mic setting...see if its the preamp

It is input b that is not working, I didn't think the external mic setting applied to input b? I thought it was only input a?

Okay, 27 views and only two responses!

This does sound out of the ordinary doesn't it (my problem with input b)?

I hate to box it up and send it back to find out that I was suffering from momentary idiocy.

Nothing I've tried will get any out put on any channel, other than the tracks 6 and 8.

I can't find my manual....

SOMEBODY HELP ME!!!!

There's something about A and B going to left and right sides of stereo bus, I'll look it up, standbye.

First thing is that the unbalanced phone connector takes priority over the xlr, you cant use both on same input, not sure if that helps, but i'll go look up more.

Also the manual is available on the web at fostex site as a PDF.

"when selecting stereo recording tracks, both the inbut a and inbut B sections can be used. the signals from the in putA and input B sections are recrded on to the odd and even tracks, respectively." - the Man

Well crap, from the sound of that, there should be no reason I'm not getting any levels from tracks 1-4 when using my "input b".

I guess it is still functional, I rarely record more than one track at a time, but there should be no reason for this to happen within a year of purchase.

"Ratso-fratsin".

Guess I'll be packing it up for its' long journey...

Allow me to try to better articulate my problem.

When I plug into input a, I can monitor the signal through my headphones, and see the little "bar graph thingy" moving.

When I plug into input b, I get neither of these, on any channel 1-4, only on the right side of channels 5/6 and 7/8 (chan 6 & 8 apparently being the "right" side) , am I able to monitor the signal through my headphones, and see the little "bar graph thingy" moving.

Does that better explain my dilemma?

Is there some setting, I have not been able to find, that controls the assignability of inputs?

When you are plugged into B, are you unplugged from A?

I just noticed something.

I can only set one track on record in one stereo pair.

I can only record on 1 &/or 2, or 3 &/or 4, or 5 &/or 6, or 7 &/or 8.

But no combinations of each pair.

so I can't set 1 & 3 or 2 & 5....

Yes, I am unplugged from input a when attempting this.

I'm probably being overly concerened about misinterpretation, but I wanted to be sure the problem was understood.
This was worded a little ambiguously, let me re-word this once again;

When I plug into input b, I can't hear a signal, on any channel 1-4, only on the right side of channels 5/6 and 7/8 (chan 6 & 8 apparently being the "right" side) , am I able to monitor the signal through my headphones, and see the little "bar graph thingy" moving.

I had mentioned before, that though I can not detect any sign of a signal being sent, if I crank the input level, I do get a peak light.

And BTW, I had noticed that too;
"I can only record on 1 &/or 2, or 3 &/or 4, or 5 &/or 6, or 7 &/or 8."

I just noticed something else, I too can't get a signal routed to a track with input B only. This is weird, but I think it's the way it works.

Try this. Input into B, A is empty. Get a signal to it, I have the radio going in, and I pump up the trim pot so i see overload w the red light so i know it's there.

Then I hit record and I select a record track. I get no sig on the meters with any SINGLE track from 1 to 4, But I too get the right side of the 2 pairs, 7/8 and 5/6, so I get 8 or 6.

But then, if I select track 2, still nada, but then if I also select track 1, w/ both lights going, I get sig on track 2.

So B is only the right side of any stereo pair.

A goes anywhere.

Ahhh (a sigh of relief)

Thank you very, very much for saving me a humiliating and expensive return to fostex!

I could have sworn it didn't neccessarily work that way! I thought for sure that I had used input b by itself before, for whatever reason.

Hopefully we don't both have defective units! lol!

Thanx again for your patience and perseverence!

BTW

This cost me about an hour of recording time last night, with everyone standing around, looking on, while I fumbled with cords, knobs, buttons, etc... (accented and perforated by profanity and frustrated, wall eyed stares)

And of course there was the heckler, 'dissin' my digital, yo'.

Thanx again.

Hey, no problemo. I learned something too. And I type fast so why not keep checking in here while I play my new mp3's from my bro-in-law I just burned from his collection. Also reading the feedback from the fest. Just hangin out winding down from the weekend, getting psyched for 6 a.m....work.

I like the red box, and I'm still finding new stuff w/ it.

My wish list is a programmable function button, or maybe 5 of them or 4 of them w/ a shift. I'd like to store a bunch of frequently accessed proecesses like, new song, delete song and dlete unused and stuff, just so i dont have to hit so many buttons navigating the menu. ...Especially click level on and off functions... I'm wondering when these buttons will wear out...

Gud luck, -j.

I haven't delved into most of the functions you mentioned, but the delete unused would definitely be very useful.
I forgot to use it on the last hard drive dump, and had to dig through ten or so files to find the newest.

So what's with the click level on/off function?

a-b

Channel B is the right side for recording in stereo, it will only show up on the stereo channels 5/6 or 7/8 . Plug in A as a stereo channel left and both of your meters will show recording in stero on chanel 5/6or 7/8 . I think thats correct . its very hard to describe these problems isnt it.

There's afew features that are cool. look more in this forum, and do a search or change your forum options to get older threads that still have tons of info.

With the standard options, you don't see all the threads in a forum. the older ones are down the list and you hve to do something to get to them.

also search for the wave manager program, i just read some stuff that makes it easier to down load from the box with it. - free utility from Fostex.
