You must first understand that the way to get the best results is to seperate all of the sounds or atleast group your ssounds according to frequency.....
Things like kiks, bass and basslines generally would get some compression maybe some filtering...
It doesn't hurt to compress the snar either and give it a pinch of hall reverb or a setting of your liking...
Your main sample you can do several things to from parmetric eq to chrous, dynamic processing reverb.....
Pan your sounds.... However don't pan your kik snar or bass this should remain in the center channel.... HH samples all other percussion are free game....
Doing this will give more life to your mixes....
So to answer your question it's not just effects its application and
it is the way you arrange your sounds in the mix....
