I recorded a hardcore band last night and I need a few questions answered.I want to send a totally seperate mix to the headphones and monitors than what's going to tape. I have a mackie 24/8 with a mix b bus and I am wondering if I can use the mix b bus to send a different mix to the cans and monitors using eq while recording to tape without eq? So, during tracking the headphone mix and monitors are eq'd and during playback the mix is also eq'd but what's going to tape is the dry signals without eq?How do I accomplish this?

You use the returns from tape to send to headphones and monitors. That way you record clean, and monitor with EQ and whatever.

If you're using the pre's in the Mackie, instead of the channel direct outputs, tap off signal from the inserts and send that to tape. You can EQ your hearts desire and it won't go to tape. Now if you're subgrouping anything (like drums) all bets are off.

umm... even if he tracks from subgroups, he can still EQ on the tapereturn-channels.

True, it depends on how he recovers it to the board.

What I'm doing is direct outs to the ins on my reel to reel than outputs of my reel to reel back in to the tape returns. What I want to do is apply eq for the headphone mix via the mix bus B on my mackie without applying eq to tape.On the mackie it's got split eq buttons on each channel and source flip switch buttons which I assume the source button is to switch between mic signals and tape returns? Also it has individual pans along with independent level controls on each channel to adjust each input strip within the mix b bus. That way I can adjust certain instruments within a headphone/monitor mix without actually adjusting the levels to tape?If I'm correct this certainly would help during sessions because they will get to hear what they want to hear right away and I can track and apply eq after the fact.Where is MR. Bear when you need him, I know he has a 24/8 and I'd like to know how he sets up his headphone mix. Thanks for the reply's!!!
