there is a lot to learn about digital recording... if you're just starting, you're going to be better off reading a book, taking a class, or learning from someone else.

in short... i use cubase and find it to be a great program, but you need to invest in a good computer for it to run well. it does not come with a mixing board. you're going to need some kind of interface to record to. the presonus firepod is very nice and includes a free version of cubase that will probably do more than what you need ($600 american). if you're hands on, there are different types of control surfaces you can buy to act as a mixing board... some of those also have preamps sufficient for recording purposes as well... although i've never used them. you're going to have less problems if you make your connections with firewire, instead of usb... again, invest in a good computer.

there are many ways to mic a drumset, but using a p.a. system is definitely not a good idea. get yourself a decent interface and hook the mics up to that directly.

again, you're gonna want to learn more about all of this before you spend a ton of money. you'll find there's a LOT more involved. hope this helps.

Cubase is a software. You can mix your music within the software after you have recorded into your computer. You can check out Cubase and its alternatives here.

However, you need an Audio Interface to record your materials into your computer. The included soundcard on your computer just won't cut it if you're looking for a decent demo quality result. If your computer has Firewire, I would suggest that over USB. Otherwise, check out USB Audio Interfaces here.

Have a look at any of the Presonus products - the firepod, firebox, Inspire. They come with diffentent numbers of preamps and inputs/outputs. However they all come with Cubase LE to get you started, and they're all firewire

the link for the audio interfaces shows interfaces with not many inputs. does this mean that i need a mixing board to send into the interface as one signal????

to record each source as a seperate track you'll need a soundcard or multiples of with enough inputs for each source you want to record to a seperate track for later mixing.

It can be a bit daunting when you scratch the surface ans realise what's involved. Good advice above is to read a book or take a class on the basics...it's a huge world of recording...then ofcourse gear lust takes over and your life becomes a perpetual ongoing of you throwing money into a bottomless pit...have fun with it. :D
