I have "inherited" 3000 bucks for studio gear and need advice on how to spend it. Right now I have a Yamaha MD8 which I really like but thru research am considering upgrading. I've looked into ADAT's and Roland's VS machines and still weighing the pros and cons.I get alot of requests to record bands either live at clubs or at their practice houses,so portability is a big concern. So I've ruled out computer based stuff. It seems to me the pros are using ADAT, the rolands are good with a steep learning curve and crappy manuals, but then again ADATs require maintenance and rolands have mastering capabilities! Its enough to drive you crazy! Also I'm gonna need some good monitors, it seems the roland D-90's are pretty cool,I considered the Alesis studio pack but the word is the mixer sucks, the effects suck so, I'm ready for some good ole down to earth advice, lay it on me!

I think that once you experience the speed and flexibility of hard disc recording compared to tape you will never look back.I personally use the Roland VS 880EX but there are several good machines out there, like the Akai and the new Fostex.Roland has the best FX,though.Cheers!

i would have to agree with virtual.ray.

Though there is a small controversy surrounding the Roland V-Studios regarding features, and upgradeablitity, they are for the $$, some great machines for home recordists.

I currently own a VS880 V-Expanded and a VS840EX, and I love em'.

A friend of mine and I have just opened a studio using two VS880's and our clients couldn't be happier.

The flexibility of the unit, coupled with those Roland effects make it a powerful machine.

Thats cool to hear good stuff about the Roland gear,I've always liked their stuff. I've read alot of moaning about steep learning curves for the VS's but since I don't personally know these people I don't know how seriously to take the reviews. I have had my eye on the VS1680, is the 1880 worth the extra bucks?

Check out this site....

Take a look at the DPS-16. It smokes the Roland units for the same price.
1:BETTER RECORDING QUALITY AND PROCESSING (24-bit/96kHz recording and 56-bit internal processing)
2:SIXTEEN SEPERATE TRACKS (Not combined channels like the Roland)
3: A 10-GIG HARDDRIVE (Roland's harddrive is a small fraction of that)

Plus, (most importantly) it's very easy to operate and the manual is very simple, unlike the more complicated Roland machine, who's manual reads like it's written in Swahili.

Do your homework, Bloozman.
Yamaha is coming out with a 16 track machine in the next few months that's supposed to smoke the competition.
Decisions, decisions!!!

Dam it! Just when I was gettin close, MORE choices! The AKAI looks pretty impressive, not familiar with the AKAI line but seems worth lookin in to! I've looked into the YAMAHA too cool, but CHICK CHING a little pricey at this juncture. Still doin my home work, always,no impulse buying here my friend!

Dude, if I were you, I'd look into the Korg D16. It's small and has basically everything you need. But that doesn't mean use it by itself. I've been seriously looking into it. I'm far from the money, but if you like working small right now, look into it.
