Help With Volume to Headphones

Hi All,
I'm new here and am wanting to know how to adjust the volume levels that go to my headphones when I add tracks.
I'm recording with a Alesis Multimix 8USB and CubaseLE5.
I need the original track that I'm adding to, to be loud enough to hear properly, but I don't know how to do this without having the signal that comes in to the headphones (from the mic I'm using in the new track) be absolutely deafening. What's the trick?

know it's something so simple, but reading the manual for CubaseLE 5 makes my head hurt....arrrgh...

Does one of those buttons on the right control what is fed back from Cubase? Can you adjust the return level?

Otherwise you just need to raise the volume of the tracks in Cubase or lower the input level on the new tracks you are recording. Keep in mind you are looking for around -18dBFS in Cubase for ideal levels. If you are recording too hot that could be creating an issue as well.

I have known quite a few people who have used the MM8 and have not heard this issue come up from them.

I wish I had one in front of me so I could tell you exactly what the issue is....

I reckon you have nailed it Jimms! Level.
DAWs are "unity gain" systems. If you record at -20dBFS (24 bits) and monitor as you go, when you play back that track it will monitor at exactly the same level.

This assumes of course that the recordist does not change the recorded level by compression and gain make up or (ugh!) "normalizing"!

Like you J' I know not of the Alesis and I am not that cute with Cubase either!
