Can anyone please help me with getting a good Soundgarden/Slint type vocal sound? I always seem to get too much reverb or not enough. I have a Shure SM57 and Shure BG 2.1

thanks

Im a huge fan of soundgarden's sound all around from the exquisitely tuned and warmly reverbed drums to the tonal and not overly distorted guitar and of course chris cornel's vocals. Youre not going to get that vocal sound with an sm57. Try upgrading to a good LDC like an NT1000 or NTK and decent pre (not mackie) and some good soft compression going in and something like Waves ren compressor (my current favorite) or their new vox compressor (which is the thickest and least noticably compressed/limited digital compression Ive ever heard),, to thicken the vocals a little more.
I didnt put the reverb on soundgardens vocals ;) but it sounds to me like A. the room they recorded in was class A and thats not a small part of why his vocals have the space they do without alot of noticable reverb B. the reverb is wide, meaning a medium-big size room verb with a subtle emphasis on early reflections and very soft trails which diffuse quickly. You should not be able to make out the trails in the mix much other than the trails on the sibilances which are prominent and give it that 'live room" vibe. This varies from song to song though, like on "room a thousand years wide" theres more reverb with noticable trails than on "outshined" or "slaves and bulldozers." I would guess that the reverb on "room a thousand years wide" is not longer than 1800ms maybe 1600ms with a slow attack of not less than 170ms whereas the reverb on most of the other songs on badmotorfinger is not longer the 1350ms with a faster attack of 130ms.
