I was asked by the guy I am working with to get:

---quote---
Kind of like Leonard Cohen on 'The Future' album, or 'I'm
your
Man". Or Nick Cave on 'Boatman's Call' or 'No More Shall We Part'.
THese
are not country recordings but their vocals are always close and big
sounding without being overly loud.

I am on my way out to pick up some recordings, but thought I would pose the question here to see if anyone had any direction or clues.

The main thing is his voice needs to sound like them. Other then that use a mic that accentuates the qualities of his voice that you like in a dry room or vocal booth and add a lot of compression.

TRK,

Thanks for the note. I did a little listening to those records and you hit it on the head. I have the tracks recorded dry and dead now and have to work on the sound in the box with my plugs.

I think since the general band sound is a bit country I had wet the vocal a bit too much, so stripping out the reverb will help a lot.

Any suggestions for first pass settings for compression?

all I have are the compressors that ship with Sonar XL.

I am getting closer. I will post a sample later this weekend if you care to comment.

Any suggestions for settings are always apprieciated.

Thanks,

Jim

attack-fast

not too hot a signal coming in, boost the make up gain if you need a higher level at the recorder

I Like the vocals on all of those albums you mentioned, esp Boatmans call. Looking foreward to your sound post. What kind of mic are you using?

I am using the best that I have which is a Studio Projects C3 into my RNP into my Q10 then to sonar.

I hope to post the about 3-4 songs with different approaches to this sound.

The sound that I am most happy with so far uses the same vocal track copied. The first track I EQ to take out a bit a 5K. The second track I roll off most of the low end, boost high, compress the heck out of it and then put a very light delay that syncs to the bpm of the song. I am using a large room reverb on the primary vocal track with the high end rolled off at 4K.

Might sounds strange to read, but I think the actual track is coming together nicely. I will post later today or tomorrow.
