Trailing Behind Again
This is an old song I am retracking. I haven't done the vocals yet because I am waiting for this cold to pass.

I need some fresh ears with monitors to tell me what I am doing wrong!

The song is called "Such A Shame"

Thanks!

I hate it when I post at home. I am 16 hours ahead of the west coast, so everyone is sleeping. It's about 2 AM in California.

I guess I will wait....

It's 20.30 hrs downunder.
I think the L & R guitars sound too similar. There's a variation of arrangement that's interesting but they're too close in tone.
The bass needs definition - try to 3Khz boost.
Some percusson is needed to break up the automaton drum pattern.
Good work thus far.
I look forward to hearing the progress.

Thanks ray! I've been stuggling with boomy bass. I guess I took it a bit too far. I can't do much about the guitars, except maybe some eq, huh?

Do you know any drummers? I'm stuck with a cheap drum machine now that MadAudio has flown the coop.

Mix updated with ray's suggestions. Anyone else hear anything?

Hi,

The snare fits nicely with the guitars which are a bit dark but the hi-hat is really too clear.
Either make the rest more clear or the hi-hat less clear ;)

Guitars are recorded with too much distortion, less distortion will increase the dynamics. You also recorded with the mic pointing at where the cone meets the speaker (I think),this is giving a bit of a too bright sound.

You should turn your mids up, turn your treble down and try to aim for a more rock sound then a metal sound on the guitar amp

I'm excited to hear what you will be doing with the vocals, keep on recording ;)

My play opens in a couple of weeks, which will free up some weeknights for me (finally) :o

Let me know when/if you need some drum tracks and I'll be more than happy to oblige

:)

I agree with those comments as much as I've agreed with anything in my life, lol. Very first thing that really stuck out to me was the excess fuzz.

Otherwise, no real nits, man. I think the bass sounds good.

Rokket, what's the bpm? I'm not good enough yet to record some real drums, but I'd gladly get you a better drum track from Ez-drummer if you'd like.

I think the guitars need more depth...maybe less distortion, and some increase in the bottom end. Not a ton, just enough to fill them out a bit.

Let me know on the drums.

Thanks everyone for the comments.

I guess I need a new amp for recording because this cheap little 10-watt number is pretty basic. I can't adjust the distortion, so I will have to deal with it.

BentRabbit - Let me know when you are ready. I already have a couple things that are right up your alley.

Dogman - 125bpm. Give it a shot! :D

Will do...Ezdrummer sounds pretty good, so hopefully I can find some rhythms that match.

Here's a quick go.....
Drums

See what you think. It's 320K...when you hear something you like, I can post a wav if you want.

Let me see what this sounds like. Is it more than one sample, or is it the song?

Ed, if you got to my soundclick page, you will see a track called 'drum sample', it's a take from the song so you can match up the kick and snare...

IMproving all the time - look forward to hearing it with a diff drum.
I know the pain - I use a 1987 TR 505.

I eq'd the crap out of the guitar parts. I tracked the vocals. I have a solo being done by Gorty. Things are shaping up. Hopefully by Monday or Tuesday, I'll have a close-to-final version to post.

Got it. I'll work on it when I get home. :)

Man, think I blew it on the vocals...

Fekkin cold...

I may not leave them on. Someone can please tell me how bad they suck?

Hey Rokket, Sounds like the mix is coming together. I haven't heard the previous versions. But now the bass sounds ok. Guitars are pretty good - tad distorted but there is a chunk-iness in there that sounds nice. The vocals are doubled aren't they? They are not perfectly matched so they will sound slightly off. But they have a raw feel that I find appealing. You sound very close to Tom Petty IMHO.... Catchy tune..... I'll try and catch any updates you post....

:) :D :) :D

ido,
Yeah, they are double tracked. I thought it sounded off, but I blame that on the chest cold that kicked my ass for the last two weeks. I figured I was over it, but the recording picked it up sure enough.

If it sounds bad, I will retrack.

Thanks for the listen.
