i am newbie to home recording... i bought a tascam uss 122mk2 with condesor mic and cubase 5.

I can record mono but only on the right channel, if the guitar is plugged in there, or only on the left chanel if mic is pluged in to that input.... i can't pan left and right wiith it....

if i record in stereo, i can only again get playback left or right..... not both

it has to be a setting in cubase, but i cant figure out what..... i have headphones plugged into he tascam to monitor the recordings.... very frusterating to say the least..

i hope someone can help me..... all i want is vocals in the middle, and to play with the pan on guitars left and right

cheers! and thanks

Welcome to the site. This gets brought up pretty often and maybe you've stumbled across your answer already.

When you create a new track in Cubase, make it Mono and not stereo, then select whatever channel your mic or guitar is plugged into.

That's it.

if i record in mono, can i pan it left and right though? Doesnt it have to be in stereo to do that?

Yes you can pan a mono track left or right. I would think that 99% of the time people record in mono and then pan it in the mix. It's the exported mix that needs to be stereo.

So, im thinking its my tascam head phone port then..... i cant get playback left, only right... and whn i pan left, i dont hear anything.... the tascam has a left and right rca output.... which i know is stereo.... but playback throgh the phones jack does not seem to support stereo.... am i correct or just dumb?

On the mixer in cubase you can see if there's a level on the left and right on the main outs. If you can see both meters moving it's something outside the PC.
