Your help and wisdom in this will be GREATLY appreciated.

I'll try to make this short, but give you the information you need to assist!

Equipment: Roland U-20 keyboard, Roland XV 3080 Sound Module, Zoom RT123 Drum Machine, 6 channel Mixer.

Software: For MIDI, I have Emagic Logic Audio AV. For audio recording, I'm using Vegas.

Computer Soundcard: Audiophile with midi in and out

I've been recording in straight audio -- keyboard out to Sound Module in, then Sound Module Thru to Zoom RT123. I run audio cables out of the Zoom and out of the 3080 into the Mixer and then into the audio inputs on the Audiophile sound card. For this I can use either Emagic or Vegas.

I want to work with midi and am learning. I'm totally baffled on a way to hook it all up so I could do MIDI recording or Audio. I'd love to be able to do both with one setup. In order to even learn, I have to get this to where the midi tutorial can be heard! :)

One suggestion I got was to run the Keyboard MIDI Out to the soundcard's MIDI In, then run the Soundcard MIDI Out to the 3080 MIDI In. Then I'd run a line from the 3080's MIDI THRU to the IN (only slot) of the Zoom. I assume I'd have to run audio cables out of the ZOOM and the 3080 into the audio mixer and then into the card??

Anyway, any help is appreciated. If this is too confusing or if you have questions, feel free to write me at bluesman@NOSPAMbga.com after removing the NOSPAM.

Many, many thanks!!!

I agree with the advice you've already recieved. Since the U20 is your "MIDI controller" send MIDI out from the U20 to the computer. Then bring a MIDI out from the computer to the 3080. Then take MIDI through from the 3080 to the Zoom.

Take audio cables from the 3080 and the Zoom into the mixer. Naturally you'll also take audio from the computer (for any digital audio you record) into the mixer.

You can then record MIDI performance from the U20 into the computer and then assign which module will receive the MIDI signal (a single MIDI cable carries 16 channels of MIDI). The only direct audio you would need to record would be vocals or non-MIDI instruments.

Under this mehod, you can not use the U20 as a sound source (but it appears you do not currently use the U20 - other than as a MIDI controller). I assume you prefer the sounds from the 3080 to the U20 - but you can always add the U20 into the MIDI chain later for additional sound options.

There are plenty of good books on MIDI - you can often find them in used book stores - as well as in new book stores.

Good luck!!
