help with recording into PC

i'm trying to keep it simple. i have a shure sm57 and some amps. i want to record directly into my PC, and i just found out going straight into the soundcard won't work. so i need a mixer or a preamp, but i know NOTHING about this stuff. can someone walk me through the logistics of connecting the mixer into the PC and whatnot? ideally, i'd like to spend around $100 and be ready to record. i would REALLY appreciate some help.

A mixer would give you a little more flexibility than a preamp (but a preamp would work also). The mixer below is ~$50 and would be suitable to get you going. You can hook your mic to the mixer then run from the tape outs (or mains) to the line in of your sound card.

You didn't mention whether you have any recording software. If not, N-tracks sells for around $50.

Purchase a M-Audio AudioBuddy preamp, about $80. Download a copy of Mackie Tracktion (offer expires 12/31).
