Help With new setup.

Hi, I am upgrading my studio, I am only 16 working with my lunch money and birthday money so I dont have much, but soon I am acquiring a large sum of money from some work I did. I currently have a Phonic 1705 with 2 Coby mics and 2 Korg A5 processors. My newest project, i wanted to purchase a 16 channel mixer and a 16 track ADAT or Hard Disk recorder. I know what i want, i want a peavey mixer and a DR16. The question that puzzles me is how exactly do i get the audio to the adat, i thought maybe i would use the Channel Inserts, but when i tested on my current mixture, the faders dont control the volume on those. so if anyone can tell me how to export each channel into the adat i would appreciate it, thanks.
 
You said you were thinking about a 16 channel board so it should be no big deal. You will use what is called a split console configuration. Eight of your channels will send signal to the recorder and the other eight inputs will be used as tape returns to monitor playback.

The inserts on your board are pre-fader. That's why the fader will not control the volume. Set your levels on the recorder using the trim on the channel strip.

Another way to do it is to use the sub-outs on the board. If it is a four buss it means you will only be able to record four tracks at a time but the signal will be post EQ and fader. This is not a bad option if you're a one man operation or you only have to track a few channels at a time like the drummer and a bass player. You can do overdubs later.

An eight buss board is ideal as each channel has it's own track, as well as being able to buss signals around from other channels to other tracks.

I gotta ask though, why do you want a Peavey board? If you're going to be rolling in dough shortly you should be looking at the Mackie 1604 VLZ Pro at the very least or a good used eight buss Mackie. Peavey stuff is OK for live sound, but I wouldn't want to use it in a recording set-up. Tascam makes or made some very nice eight buss boards that are not an arm and a leg right now. You can find them used for less than half what they sold for new.
 
thanks, i was also thinking, so i can spend some more on the board, maybe i could use a inca 88. Or 2 inca 88s. if thats possible. I know i wont get the quality, but i am on a shitty budget, thanks foor the info.
 
oh, and a peavey board, cause i get them at really good prices, i have a contact for wholesale. or wholesale prices, its a hassle, but its cheaper. and as fdor Sub-Outs, I dont see any, i have something that says Group 1/2. Could trhat be it?
 
Yeah, that's it, but that is a two buss board or stereo. It's a live board. I don't even think Peavey makes a dedicated recording board but you can get by on a four buss.

If you use this with an ADAT you will be forever re-patching and cursing the whole time. I recommend against it.
 
thing about this is i am trying to figure out whats on what bus, and i cant, or is their a way to set that?
 
I record to 2 ADATS from a Mackie board, I use the Inserts to send the signal.

It's true that the faders don't control the output level, but the Trim control DOES (at least on Mackies).

As long as you get a hot signal to the ADAT, you can then route the ADATs back into the mixer line inputs for mixing, then you can use the faders.

Don't know about the Peavey, but if it's got Inserts, I'd be surprised if there wasn't a Trim control on each channel. Give it a shot!

thanks, but i dont have a peavey right now, its a Phonic :| i am trying to sell it. I am selling all my stuff to get a good amount to spend.

and dont get familiar with them,, cause oh lord do they suck. they have more hiz than lowz so i cant do much with it.
 
That might be a live board too. Most manufacturers aren't as concerned about noise on a live board as they are with a studio board.

That doesn't mean they don't care at all, it's just that the pre-'s in a studio console and the circuitry will be quieter.
 
Now you're talking. That's about ten times better than the best Peavey live board you'll ever find.

It ain't an SSL , but it will allow you to record effortlessly and will sound a lot better than a Peavey.;)
 
i was actually about to bid on that one, one last thing, um, do you think since its 4 buss and 8 channel that its 2 channels per bus? cuase that isnt how it is with my current mixer.
 
Yes it is two channels per buss. But, you can buss any channel to any track. The drawback is that if you are using an eight track machine you can only record four tracks at once unless you have direct channel outs to tape.
