Thank you for your help and sorry for my English

Im a bit lost. I just got a Behringer Xenyx 1002fx and i decided to record some pieces but ive ran into problems.I have my mic and guitar plugged in correctly. My computers soundcard plugged directly to the CD/Tape in and outputs and headphones in the headphone output. The thing i dont really understand is why the CD/TAPE TO CTRL switch cuts out my guitar and mic and preventing me from hearing myself and the backing track on my computer at the same time... Ive pretty much come to the conclusion i need to something to mix the main out and ctrl room tracks together for my headphones but that seems like such a waste of money for me...

Id appreciate if someone could help me or atleast point me in the right direction.

Oh dear Hjelmer!

Like SO many others, if only you had come here sooner! You have already wasted you money well, a bit. You did not need a mixer, what you need is an Audio Interface.

But do not despair, the mixer could well come in useful. If you study the block diagram attached for your mixer you can see why you have a monitoring problem? You can listen to what is going OUT of the mixer or, what is coming back from the computer but not both at the same time! An interface, together with suitable recording software will give you this option.

To save you some money I suggest you look for a second hand AI and two good, old ones are the M-Audio Fast track pro and the Tascam US 122 or 144. Sadly both these AIs, as did many at the time, have rather indifferent mic amps but you could use the Behringer as a better pre amp.

For software check out Reaper. Free until you get very guilty and then not very expensive.

I will leave you to have a mull (think) and also let my youngers and betters have a say.

Dave.

Read this thread about mixers and home recording, as well as all the other sticky threads at the top of this forum, too.
