In the slow process of setting up a very small home recording area. I just got the M-audio Audiophile sound card and a Behringer Eurorack UB802. Everything is working fine, but I am running into a dilemma and can not figure out how to solve it.

When I want to record vocals, I want to hear the mix through my headphones along with the vocals. The headphones are plugged into the controlroom/headphone out. But I don't want to hear the vocals or anything else through the monitors since the mic is in the same room. The only way I can stop sound from coming from the monitors is to unplug them or turn them off. I can't turn the monitor volume down from the mixer without turning the main mix down, which I need turned up to record. This is extremely annoying, to reach around and turn them off, record, then turn them on to hear the whole mix through the monitors. Am i totally missing something?

I looked for a simple speaker switch with no luck. Is there a better set up or even a better mixer for under $100 that has more set up options?

This is a common problem. With your setup there is no way around it. I know people have the same problem with siab's like the roland 2480. It has a separate volume knob for the headphones, but if you turn the control room volume down it affects the headphone volume. It is just a pain.

Not sure I understand what you are doing vocals with. Is this prerecorded music, with which you are adding vocals?

What is current connection approach for mixer, monitors, and recorder?

samson C-control $99. it controls your headphones and monitors. i have the ap24/96 and ub802 your going to need to buy something to route the mix and mixer to to hear both

distortedrumble: so if I get this samson C-control, I can plug the control room output on my ub802 into this and then select whether I want headphones and monitors or just headphones? I can route the mix and mixer to the control room while only the mixer is being sent to the soundcard.

It seems like this would (should) be an option on the mixer.

It is a minor miracle that you have a mixer with two preamps for the price. Don't get greedy. :)

I usually find ways to do this without buying anything else. Where are the monitors connected?

the only other way to do this is to buy 2 splitter cables and have a set of cables going to the monitors and buy a connector to route the other to cables to it and thats where you could stick your headphone jack. the only problem with this is that your headphones wont be powered so hearing the mix through them will sound quiet. now if you have a home reciever....you can always route the cables to it and use the headphone output it on it. and i agree with boingoman. you bought a straight forward mixer. if you bought a more expensive mixer with more inputs and inserts then it would be possible to route everything through the mixer. $50 bucks doesnt go as far as it used to.

Ed Dixon: the monitors are connected to the main out from the mixer.

So at what price range does this functionality come in?
I'm not trying to complain, just find a good solution around this annoying problem. The C-Control sounds like a very good option.

Ed asked a good question:
What is the rest of your gear? How is the mixer connected to the recorder
Also, do you record more than one track at once?

Also, how is the recorder connected back to the mixer (if at all)? How and when are the monitors desired to be used?

Except that it adds significant coloration to the signal.........

with a $100 soundcard and $50 mixer is it going to be that noticable?

The current way its connected is the soundcard out to the mixer tape in, the mixer tape out back to the sound card. The monitors are connected to the Main out. And the Headphones are connected to the control room. The only other gear I have are my instruments and a mic which are plugged into the mixer. I only record one track at a time.

I want to use the monitors any time I am not recording basically. The headphones are ok, but to hear the true mix, I prefer the monitors.

Can you not connect the sound card out to the monitors instead of the mixer?

That way your PC drives the monitors from your mix, and the mixer is only used for input/recording processing?
