hi...what i'm planning to do with the m-audio delta 1010 is recording drums on 6 different tracks. i have a behringer mx2004...that i will be using the channel inserts to go to the inputs of the delta 1010 rack mount box. now which outputs do i put my speakers into??? any help is appreciated...thanks a bunch

I don't have the 1010 (it's on the way though -ebay last nite :-) ) but assuming it's possible the simplest way would be to route the entire mix to be monitored out of two of the 8 outputs...then just plug those two outs to your speakers (or amplifier if you have passive monitors). You may need an adaptor if your amp doesn't have 1/4 jacks.

Alternately, and this is what I would do...you could do the same thing with the two delta outputs, but INSTEAD connect them (using adaptors) into your mixers TAPE INputs. This way you would be using your mixer to its full capability...plug the speakers or amp into the control room outs... and presto! you'll be able to use the monitoring switches to either monitor your inputs at the board, or what's coming out of the 1010.

Hope that helps

thanks...so i am able to make all of the inputs come out thru the 2 outputs? also...for now, im using regular computer speakers =(...and they all go to jus one single stereo 1/8" plug (altec lansings). so what should i do now??? buy a cord that will split the plug into two 1/4" mono plugs???

Just connect them to the Headphone jack of the Mixer for now.

When you move up to some Nearfields you can hook-em up throught the Main or Control Room outs.

As for Trogdors advice, I don't know why you would need to route the drums through the computer and back out, when you already have them hooked up to your mixer. The tape in part I agree with though, so you can mix and monitor live while recording with pre-recorded tracks.

But who am I to say!?:)

I didn't say to route ALL of the drums back to the mixer...I just said to route two of the 1010 outs to the tape ins to get a stereo mix for playback/overdubbing/etc.

Maestro is right about just plugging your speakers into the headphones out...you will get the same thing that is coming out of the control room outs, depending on what you have your mixer set to monitor. And you can still control the level with the control room volume.

If all you did was plug the speakers into the phones jack you wouldn't be able to hear anything playing back...

Hence routing 2 outs to the tape ins.

In my setup I simply don't have any need to monitor through the computer anything but the pre-recorded tracks. I don't re-route the signal from the 1010's ins back out two of the 1010's outs because I don't have the need.

My 1010's analog outputs are all connected to inputs 1-8 of my mixer because I like the ability to mix as much as possible hands on.

When I record multiple simultaneous sources, I use a second mixer patched with it's direct outs in to the 1010's inputs.
I then patch the main L-R out of that mixer into channels 9-10 of my "working" mixer for live monitoring. This way I'm already set up for instant playback after recording, and no feedback loops.

BTW I was agreeing with you about the "tape in" part of what you said, I just thought that you wanted him to monitor everything, live and pre-recorded, through the computer via the 1010.:

If all you did was plug the speakers into the phones jack you wouldn't be able to hear anything playing back...
Maybe you didn't see that part of my post? Where I agreed with you?

my mistake...i misunderstood your post and didn't realize you were just saying that you wouldn't route the inputs along with the recorded stuff out of the 1010.

By the way, what kind of mixer are you using for the direct outs when tracking multiple sources?

I've got a behringer 1604 which i can only use the L R and 1 & 2 buses to get a total of four preamplified tracks...

I'm considering either getting a board with more pre's that i can send more individual tracks to the 1010....or just getting a couple outboard preamps to use in conjunction with the mixer. price is an issue since i'm in college... :-)

thanks a bunch, i think i got it....so this is wat i do...

connect the channel inserts with the inputs on the sound card....(use a snake, or jus regular 1/4 to 1/4 cords??)

then the first 2 outputs of the sound card go to the tape inputs on my mixer

then my computer speakers go into the headphones...and i can control the volume or watever using the control room volume...

and also, now do i have to change the settings of the sound card 2? or will it already kno that everything will be going thru outputs 1 and 2....

and by the way, by doing all of this, i CAN listen to playback...correct?

that sounds good... you could use a snake, but 1/4 to 1/4 cables will be fine. You will have to tell your sound card to play out of those two outputs.

Once you have the 1010 coming back to the mixer (which you will need 1/4 to RCA cables or adaptors for) you will be able to monitor monitor playback as long as the "2 track" or "tape in" or whatever it says button is pushed under your monitoring options on the mixer.
