okay, so it comes down to The Shure ksm32 or the Audio Technica at4050...........what confuses me is my voice. On some songs it can be loud, aggressive and raspy, and on others it can be smooth and subtle. I need something to balance out the sibilance from the raspiness and esses, and have a warm sound.
I feel like i need a mic where I can control the way it sounds by eq'ing it without having mud or sibilance in the way... i need feedback its apprecieated

i would post samples but this is my first post

Goodness, I've also had the problem with hypersizzle with deep vocals. Anyone who can chime in will be appreciated!

Sorry, OP, I know that the user settings may have excited you that someone may have answered. :D

You can upload samples to lightningmp3.com

I am not too familiar with the 4050, but I've used a ksm32 a bit. Not a huge fan, but don't remember it being to bright. If you're having troubles with harshness on the top end, an SM7 is usually a good bet.

I am not saying there is nothing better, but if you can't get suitable results from an AT4050 nothing will. Review

i run my mic into my firepod preamps...soon i hope to get a new one but i know a 200 dollar amp won't make a difference
and i need 5 posts before i can post links on this thread...
i also posted the same thread on gearslutz under the same name and there's links to my music on there...check them out there

i used the ksm32, and didn't like it....

bought a KSM 44 after a recording session using it, just love it.

i use it for almost anything.

multi pattern, win.

what kind of voice do you have?

i know the ksm44 has a brighter sound to it than the ksm32...that's not the sound i like. I want a warm transparent sound.
and now, instead of the AT4050 being a choice, the 4047 is what I'm leaning towards since the 4050 is on the "brighter" side

Again, can't go wrong with an SM7.

The samples on Gearslutz didn't seem too bad, but didn't seem particularly deep either. You'd get a lot less harsh top, plus the prox effect would add some weight - if that's what you're looking for.

thanks:cool:...I've always known about this one but have also known about the noise and how much of a pain it is to find the right preamp for it, still looking into it though

I never noticed it too be all that noisy - maybe with a poor preamp because it does require a fair amount of gain. Either way, it's not noisy enough to keep Thriller from being the best selling album of all time. Not bad creds......

ehh...Someday I'll be able to get a better preamp. I know how important it is....anyone have thoughts on ribbon mics?

They generally need a lot of gain as well.....
Tell me about it. The DMP3 is supposed to drive the SM7b well, but I still had to gun the thing so much that I started to pick up RFI. Nasty business. You should grab a preamp with even more than 66dB of gain in my opinion. X_X

It's a shame, because the SM7b was probably my favorite microphone for deep vocals I've ever used, but I had to get rid of it for microphones that soared in a more naked mix, which the SM7b generally is awful at.

Hmmm. I wouldn't blame that on the mic. A Noisy preamp is at fault there. I'm generally at 40-50db of gain for Vox with an SM7, so you shouldn't need a whole lot more than that, but it does need to be clean gain.

The DMP3 isn't exactly what one would call a noisy preamp, especially at 40-50dB, where it's really quiet. It doesn't seem to start making a lot of noise until 60dB. It also doesn't impart a lot of color to the source, so in reality, it is the microphone. It's just that the DMP3 doesn't mop up the sound like some others out there. I'm sure that with a more colorful preamp the SM7b would soar in a "naked" mix.

SM7b with fethead through a presonus audiobox...the fethead gives it about 20db of gain (i think)

this song sounded like the naked kind of mix you mentioned and it didn't sound noisy to me at all

So you are saying that a good preamp REMOVES noise from a mic? Can you explain how this could possibly be?
