help with connections

this is probably a dumb question but from what i can see, this is the place to post it. I want to get into recording and I'm looking at doing it with my computer. I know a good deal about computers but am fairly unfarmiliar with computer recording hardware. I've been looking at m-audio and emu but on their products Ive noticed a connection I didnt recognize. On emu, it is featured on the external boxes like the 1820 and on m-audio it is on most of their external boxes like the firewire 410. I don't know how to describe it other than that it appears to be the female end, its not 1/4" and its not 3 pin xlr and on both it is on the front of the box and occupies inputs 1 and 2. I was wondering what it is, what it is used for and how it is used. Thanks for the help.

actually, you have seen them before, you just didnt recognize it

it is a combo jack, which means you can plug in both a 3 pin xlr plug and a 1/4 inch plug. Not at the same time, but you just have the option of using one or the other based on your setup and needs.
