Please help this cat. I just installed the 24/96 and drivers. Device Manager says everything is working properly but I don't have any sound. The speakers are fine as I hear them click when I turn them on and off.
Before installation, I uninstalled the ESS Audio Drive drivers. I notice I lost the little speaker icon.
I am running Windows 98 on a Compaq Presario desktop.
I guess something is misconfigured or not configured. Can anybody help me out...I'm burnt from just getting the drivers installed. Thanks people !

Did you wait to install the card until AFTER you had installed the driver package from m-audio? Usually you have to run the installer first and THEN put the card in, because the windows installer doesn't install everything thats necessary.

If you go to start -> control panel -> system -> device manager and look under sound video and game controllers is the audiophile listed? if you double click on it does it say that it is working properly?

Are your speakers connected directly to the card's outputs? are you sure they're not connected to the inputs?

Sorry if some of these Q's are obvious...i'm not trying to insult your intelligence...just figure out what might be causing your problems. Hope one of those helps.

go to the device manager like the top person says if you see the auphelite listed try removing it and then reinstalling the drivers. Also search for "volume control" and under "options" see if it has your new soundcard set as its new playback and recording soundcard.

Uh...

I first installed the hardware, then ran the driver disc. When I booted up this morning, I had a conflict. I changed the settings and re-started and now when I look at device manager , the audiophile is there, I click on that and it says the device is working properly, I click resources and it says no conflicts. When I go to accesories-volume control,...nothing. I'm unsure about settings and when I try to open my recording program I get a pop-up that says it can't find a driver. I guess I should have a flashing sign somewhere that says "IDIOT"...oh, I see that's been done before. I'd hate to have to uninstall and re-install the drivers, as It was a b..ch the first time, I will do it if you guys think that would help. I appreciate the help guys...more input? Ok wait, I had the speaker still coming out from it's original out, but that doesn't exsist anymore right? I'll have to wait 'till radio shack opens and get an adapter...what a dumbass! I could be wrong but my gut tells me this isn't the only problem. Hope you guys will stick with me for a bit...I think I'm almost there.

Hmmm, first of all I just wanna know your definition of a "driver," this is because you said it was hard installing the driver the first time. I don't understand why since the driver is just the program that runs your soundcard. All you have to do to uninstall it is go to the device manager and remove your audiophile. And then put in the CD that came with your soundcard that contains the driver files and install the files over.

But anyway with your problem, coincidentally I was just installing a new soundcard last night the delta 66. So the process is really fresh in my mind. Now you said when you booted your computer it said you had a conflict. You said you reconfigured and the problem was gone. Sometimes even if there is a conflict it doesn't show up on your device manager so the conflict might still be there. To fix this you would actually have to take apart your computer again and put your audiophile in another PCI slot and reinstall it. Now thats annoying so leave this as your last option.

you said you uninstalled only your last soundcards driver, does that mean the soundcard is still in your PC? If so do you have your speaks jack still connected to the old sound card? If so connect it to the audiophile. Im not familiar with the back of an audiophile so you'd have to look and check this. Does it have jack input for your type of speakers? Cuz I know my delta 66 doesn't have 1/8 mm jacks and that's my speakers jack size. so I use my old soundcard for that.

If your audiophile doesn't have the correct input jack for your speaks just install your old soundcards drivers again. Besides you can run two soundcards at once. Thats what Im doing right now. Just make sure when you run your recording program that you have the audiophile as your input device.

Give me an update on what happens cuz I can just keep on typing a lot more things that might be wrong or that you could do so its easier if I can pinpoint exactly what's wrong.

still a conflict

I didn't have a soundcard, I just had the ESS Audio Drive chipset on the motherboard that came with the Compaq, but I did uninstall the drivers for the ESS. Here's what I'm getting now: Everytime I re-start the pc, and check device manager it shows a conflict-(code 15), if I then go to resources and set configuration manually, everything is fine...no conflicts, device is working properly, and I have sound. After a shutdown and startup, I have to go through this process again.
This is after I uninstalled drivers, shutdown, uninstalled soundcard,re-start to make sure everything was gone, re-installed soundcard, restart, windows searched and installed drivers. This sounds a bit fishy huh?

several points.
1. do you have the sound card on its own irq ?
as a matter of interest do you use internet hi speed ?
with maybe a network card installed ?. please list your
compaq configuration. are you using 98 or xp ?
2. make sure you have the latest drivers for the sound card.
go to audiophiles web site to check version numbers.
3. in magix audio studio and i forgot this when i installed a different sound card. on the top menu click on SYSTEM menu choice in magix audio studio and you will see a dialog pop up.
consisting of recording and playback tabs on the left hand side of the dialog. click on these tabs and make sure that magix is not pointing to the old ess drivers. you will see check marks you place
for which drivers to use. then make sure its saved as part of for example your standard 16 or 24 track template. then when you start a new song open up the template.
click on each track on lhs and remember to set it to mono if you want a mono track recorded.
4. are you getting sound out of audiophile NOW ? you can test this by in explorer just playing any windows sound.
or say set up a drum machine to the input of audiophile and make sure you hear it in your speakers. btw are you using computer speakers with their own power built in that were attached before to the on board ess sound output ?
be patient there are lots of audiophile users working away.
normally its silly little set up problems.
also what processor are you using and chip set ?

monkeyshock more thinking

1. as a last resort consider disabling the on board sound , by going into the bios set up. but DONT do this if you dont know how. if you get to this point its a good idea to get a computer tech to troubleshoot your system and install the audiophile for you. its probably some thing silly in some setting.
a tech will be able to sort it out.
2. you say you have to manually configure each time you boot up ? then you get sound output ? do you get at that point some dialog that says click OK or APPLY ? the reason i ask is it seems that the manual config settings are not being saved somehow.
3. for future reference a lot of people running big daw rigs tend to shy away from using name brand retail PC's. FYI typically because some computer vendors dont always follow all OPEN
specifications. instead they opt for what is called a NO NAME or WHITE BOX CLONE. with all standard open components inside.
this is what i have. maybe in a few years and you come to your next pc purchase its something to consider.
if you really try everything then i would suggest you contact audiophile tech support at the earliest, because its probably some simple setting somewhere.
what i find strange is all over the net folks are happy with this sound card.
also one final tip MAKE SURE DMA IS ENABLED ON YOUR HARD DRIVES. daw's need this.

ok...

I uninstalled or deleted any other gaming or music programs.
I go to device manager, open audiophile2496,open resources tab, and it says the following:
"Windows cannot determine which resources this device is using.Windows cannot assign a configuration due to a conflict with other devices in the computer". So I am prompted to Set Configuration Manually and there is a list of conflicts:
Input/Output Range 0000 - 001F used by:
Programmable interrupt controller
Input/Output Range 0000 - 000F used by:
Motherboard resources
Input/Output Range 0000 - 003F used by:
Motherboard resources
Input/Output Range 0000 - 003F used by:
Direct memory access controller

I'm pretty sure there's a simple fix, but I'm not getting it. I don't know enough about computers. I'm running windodws 98. The latest drivers all seem to be for 98SE. Bmanning, can you expand on enabling DMA...sorry, I dont know what that means. I emailed tech support, but my wording may keep them from replying, as I obviously don't know much about the system. I can get the card to work by highlighting one of the Input/Output Range on the conflict list and then clicking ok. Then after shut down and start up I have to do it again. I don't know what I should change the numbers to. The drivers were installed using the disc that came with the card.
I'm gonna go get the latest windows update...

explanation

i dont have a presario, but it sounds to me that windows has become confused. let me explain. a code 15 means that the sound card is trying to occupy the same irq as something else on your system like a network card or printer. ive seen this happen in the following cases.
when a system was used for other purposes before being put to use as a daw. eg as an office system or for networking or gaming etc.
DMA = direct memory access. if its not turned on for your hard drives, and some retail dealers forget when they sell a system,
you wont get the full benefit of the drives operating at high speed which audio needs. in 98 you can go to device manager , click on "generic drive"
then "PROPERTIES" then "SETTINGS" tab, and you will see
a dma check box. but i'm flying in the dark here as i dont know what you have in your system.
back to the conflict issue. think of it like this. there is a car with one seat only. but two people are trying to occupy the seat.
a crude analogy. but each occupant needs his own seat.
i really need some more info. what else do you have in your system ? device manager has a list.
if you go to the audiophile site as i did to try and help you will notice that there are lFAQ's and support answers.
PLEASE give me more info on your devices in the pc.
is it amd or intel ? how old ? cpu rating ? 1 ghz or less ?
2ghz ? what was it used for ?

Make sure you disable your onboard sound in the bios, as that could be the cause of your conflict.

Ok...i got it now.

As it turns out, I had to "disable" the ESS Audio Drive, not remove it. A very simple fix, albeit costly...$45. Strange though...Compaq specifically said "remove", I have it in print. That's cool, I'm good to go now. Just got to set-up my recording software and pre-amp and I'll be back recording. Thanks very much to everybody for their efforts and feedback. Hope I can return the favor someday.
Thanks again bmanning, sorry to be a pest. Happy Holidays !

glad you got it working

happy for you. just remember in audio studio to make sure under
system menu choice to make sure the proper check boxes are checked for the drivers as i said before.
another tip. send a test tone set just below 0db, about 3 db
through the ub to sound card and out to your monitoring.
so all faders are set -3db which leaves you a bit of room.
also if you want to monitor over headphones whats coming out the soundcard just put a cassette deck between the sound card and your monitoring with a pair of headphones plugged into
the cassette deck set to pause/record. if the cassette deck has a vu meter all the better for setting levels.
also note in audio studio in the middle of each waveform graphic
if you click on it is a little square box. by dragging the mouse up and down you can raise and lower the tracks volume or part of a track.
youve got talent. best of luck. read the audio studio help carefully. theres a lot of tricks to learn not immediately apparent like using the compressor in the mixer subtly to boost apparent volume.
btw - give me feedback on how clean the ub preamps are.
i'm just curious.

manning!....thanks

Hey... Finally ! I think I have everything working. I was having trouble getting the card and magix in sync. I was trying to record and playback in some way other than RAM. Jeez, my brain is fried from running in circles. I just did a vocal test, and it sounds fine. I'm only getting left side though, hmmm. The last few days, I've spent every minute from 5am to midnight...not counting a 10 hour workday, reading the manuals and trying different settings, MAN I'm beat, but happy at last. I hope to get my levels right during the week, and do some recording this weekend. We'll see how the old Sony mic sounds now !
Manning1...I did a restore on my pc the other day so I lost your email. If you want to resend it, that would be great. Include your address and tell me your favorite brand of strings, and I'll make sure you get a couple of sets by Christmas. You've been a huge help, just getting me to think in the right direction when I'm lost.
Have you got the 2004 version yet ? OK, see ya !:D

this is really important MS

dont worry about the strings. nice of you but i have plenty.
really important in audio studio is how you initially set up the tracvk template. heres the process i went through.
have two drives on pc. one for windows, one for audio.
on audio drive i set up a folder called mysongs.
with subfolder for each one like "My funny song 1" , "song 2"
whatever. POINT MAGIX to it. make your own 24 track template
based on the provided magix template . but i changed it .click on each blank yellow track number and you will see audio record options. click on left or right as audiophile is a stereo sound card.
MAKE SURE YOU LEAVE STEREO AND MONO BLANK.this is what worksfor me anyway. if on playback you are getting the played back track in one ear with pan centre. you probably recorded a
stereo track unbeknownst.
so what i do isset up 16 tracks as mono and 8 as stereo THEN save in for example "My song1" mentioned earlier.
THEN when you come back for a later session another day just click on file and go down to recent files list and you'll see my song 1 listed as a recent song in the menu. click on it and the whole song session loads.
I set up a FAST RECORD so i bypass the recording dialog so i cleck REC on a track andwith a kbd shortcut i just press ins on the keypad andrecording starts immediately.
here are my settings IN THE RECORD DIALOG
format options = wave
MAKE SURE PLAYBACK WHILE RECORDING IS TICKED, otherwise you wont hear previously recorded tracks. REALLY think of a VIP as a SONG. if you want i'll list all my settings.
the hardest part for me was setting up audio studio initially , but once i did it was plain sailing. They have obviously tried to cater for everyonesneeds. so lots of options. its vitaly important to make sure the recording device in the record dialog isset
properly.

my email

you can get to it through my soundclick.com/bmanning site.
sorry dont want to repost it because else one gets junk stuff.
