Hi,

Is there a maximum capacity for a commercial audioCD? I mean for CDRs there are 650M/74min and 700M/80min, what about audio CD?

I've just completed a project where the whole CD is 696M. I would like to send the CD for mass replication. I am concern that the size might be too big for a commercial audio CD....

please advise! thanks! :)

Commercial CDs are a maximum of 74 minutes........ period.... (as dictated by Redbook spec)

Thanks Bruce, I think you are right... :(

Does this mean I have to cut off 50M of audio from the CD? any alternatives?

Does this also mean CD plants only accept 650M/74min CD-R as master disc?

I could be wrong about this, but I think there are some places that WILL press you an extended length CD, for a premium price, of course. If it's critical to have thsoe extra minutes, I believe it can be done (for a price). I'm happy to be corrected if I'm wrong, but a few years back it was an issue with a project i was working on, and the client was considering it as a possible option. In the end, though, he added even more material and went with a double CD.

Somebody must be doing it, because there are commercial CDs that are longer than 76 minutes. I'm pretty sure Tool's 'Aenima' album is, and I know my sister has a 3-CD set of somebody reading Homer's Odyssey, and the discs in there push 80 minutes.

BlueBear said the magic words-- Redbook spec!

You can get commercial albums on a CD-type disc at over 74 minutes.... it's just then out of RedBook and therefore not *technically* a CD. :)

(Isn't that also why you're supposed to burn masters for duping disc-at-once? Or does that no longer matter? Anyone?)

CD copy protection schemes often take discs out of RedBook too. They had a tiff with Philips and now the protected discs aren't supposed to say "CD" on them as they are out of RedBook and therefore not *technically* CDs. Or so I've read.

I own a commercial "CD" or two that's over 74 minutes.

There's no guarantee that any CD player will properly play the additional 6 minutes of extended CDs.... 'cos it's out-of-spec.... (although many can play them)

Your target audience is something to think about when duping a large number of CDs -- they won't buy 'em if they can't play 'em!

;)
