Hello,

Please excuse my ingnorance of PC recording, but right now the ignorance is all I have.

I am hoping that some of the seasoned folks here might help me with the direction I might could take with the current laptop I have.

Gateway Solo Pro 9300
PIII
9.33GB, 7.75GB currently available
128MB RAM
MS 98 second edition
Maestro Soundcard
2 usb ports

I have loaded Pro Tools Free and it seems to playback and function fairly well. Of course I realize recording will probably tax the system more. Is there something other than PTF that I can use? I looked at the MBox but it seems to only be available for P4/XP. Is there an external device (sound card) that will allow me to use the laptop with midi?

I know, I am green as can be when it comes to PC recording. I have a Tascam 788 and was hoping that the laptop might help me get some keyboard sounds and drum sounds going via midi. Of course I am always looking for extra tracks. Any help would be much appreciated.

Peace,
vp

There's a whole bunch of stuff. The main components being software, soundcard and preamps.

How much do you want to spend?

I would like to keep the price as low as possible. Not to be cheap but mainly because this will be temporary system until I can get a good DAW system going. I don't need tons of inputs. My main goal would be to get some virtual synth and drums from the laptop that I can sync with the 788.

What type of soundcard would you recommend?

How about software? Cakewalk or N-tracks, how would they function with my given system.

Thanks for your time.

Peace,
vp

n tracks will work and is cheap as they come, you can't really cheap a sound card, save up and go with m-audio, given you have onboard audio...

if you must, sound blaster live, newegg.com...rec gives rough results, playback is decent, save up...

heh, missed the Maestro Soundcard, they will most likely work together, both cards on one system, do a google to review of your current card to find it's ratings...

Fusion2,

Thanks for the advice. I will check it out.

Peace,
