Hi guys! Well, we've more or less made the decision to upgrade to a Digi 002 (the mixer, not the rack version), and it obviously wants a pretty kickass system (dual processor, 512mb ram, etc.).
Well, a Mac would be nice, but I don't think we can swing a G5.
I'm fairly computer ignorant, although the wife is an IT manager with more knowledge than me. Now, my needs are minimal as they go, not generally midi based, not too many plugins, with editing more likely simple than complex. Can anybody give me some suggestions about where they would go to acquire or build the system, and how much I'm looking at for a minimum to midrange outlay? Any help is greatly appreciated- we've just started spec'ing systems.-Richie

I can't help with compatibility questions or anything but I'll give you what I just got for $2000 bucks even.

3.0 P4, Gigabyte 8IPE1000 Pro MOBO, 1gb Geil ram, Windows XP home, CD/DVD ROM deck, CDRW burner 52X, 2 120 gb Seagate Baracudas ( very quiet ), onboard firewire & USB, S/PDIF in/out, 17" Sony LCD, other irrelevant junk. From ABS computers. Seemed to have the best prices out there, at least in the sphere of my own research. I'm putting it in a closet because of fan noise. The CPU fan is pretty noisy....may replace it and the chip fan....but not too bad with the fans on low.

Of course, if you're going Mac, most of this is useless to you. I've been looking at the 002 also, but I think it really likes Mac although they claim it'll do Windows. Very nice machine. I'm leaning now toward the Tascam 1884 with Sonar because of the Windows thing.

Good luck!

Thanks Detuned and Lindsay! Working.....Working....-Richie

The 002 doesn't need all that much power. $2000 would be way opverspending. I spent 1000$ on my system about 6 months ago, .2 GHz slower than the aformentioned, with half the RAM (also GeIL). Hadnles anything ProTools can toss at it. Pricewatch.com and Newegg.com are your friends. DVD-R drives, CD-R drives, and hard disk drives are dirt cheap. Search on newegg and you'll be shocked. The most expensive parts are the mobo, CPU, and RAM, but those shouldn't go above maybe $500.

I run mine with a $1200 laptop- PIV 2 Gig w/ 512 ram and it does the job. The firewire interface has been very stable and does its job without incident other than the occasional restart being needed.

The 002 will run on most any reasonalbe computer you can throw at it these days. Just make sure it meets the compatibility specs on digi's website and is above the minimum resource requirements.

And resisit the temptation to buy a BAD ArSE computer- it'll be ho hum in a few months anyway, but the bills will still be just as high.

Take care,
Chris

which laptop

Chris

I own a TDM system, but am thinking of getting a laptop to go portable with a Mbox or oo2r - What kind is working for you. I’ve checked the DUC and see what they’ve found but its interesting to hear what works for you - - BTW - Just moved here - Santa Cruz from Chicago a few months ago….. big change
