hi,
i am a total newbie to computer recording. i am looking to set up a laptop-based system (p4 2.4g, 512ram) with an external hd. i am a solo artist so i usually record only one or two tracks at a time. i already have mics, monitors, preamp, compressor.
i have no clue about all of the software/interface choices. basically i would like to have one package to track acoustic instruments, add drum loops, soft-synths (i have no experience with these), edit, mix, master, etc.
i have looked at the mbox which would be in my price range ($500), but i am not sure if protools le has all of these applications or if i would have to spend a lot more money for "plug-ins".
thanks for any feedback

ProTools LE is the way they make a shitload of money. It doesn't come with many plugs, and then you spend a fortune on buying the necessary plugs. If you can afford it, though, it is a great way to go.

For a system that will drive nicely right out of the box, seriously consider Sonar 3, it comes loaded with some awesome plugs (www.cakewalk.com). Put an Audiophile 2496 card in front of it, and there you have two analog in/two analog out, a S/PDIF in/out and MIDI connectivity.
Bob's yer uncle.
