Metal dude
I hope someone can offer some insite. I want to know if this the best way to do this:
Track 1- drum machine (mono)
track 2 -guitar (hard left)
track 3 -guitar (hard right)
I want to have a stereo guitar tracks, theres no room to bounce now.(only track 4 is open)
Tape outputs(1-3) into external mixer,add eq,compression, gate.
Mixer tape outs into mini disc.
Record mini disc track back on to fresh tape (tracks 1&2)
this gives me a stereo guitar track, with drums. and tracks 3&4 open for recording.
If i want a left and right guitar tracks, is this the only way to do it????? anybody got a better way to do it??

This could work too!!!!

Of course it's always all up to you, but with keeping stereo guitars in mind, you could say..... record the drum track, the bass and 1 guitar track, then bounce the drum and bass together (very carefully) and have 2 open tracks and one track with drums & bass and the other with your first guitar. From there you could record your second guitar and another track after that, all without going to the minidisc!!!! But that's only if you are looking to keep it all on the tape until mixdown time.... But, as I always say, the world is your recording "oyster"...... track it up!!!!!!!!!!!
Steve

cat skinning

little z is of couse correct.

since you can 'externally bounce' to minidisk.......why not record the drum machine AND guitar tracks in stereo.
Use all 4 tracks. you are taping over two tracks returning the music back from the minidisk anyway so......

i have a 303 groovebox and it has the ability to set up all of its sequencer tracks individually with regards to a host of perameters including the stereo positioning.
i like to seperate my drum sequences hard right and left so i can then EQ both channels differently.
for instance......machine cymbols basically suck...so i'll pan all of the cymbols hard right and i can then apply some EQ. maybe a pinch of delay(3-8ms), and possibly just a dash of reverb.
i also pan the rest herd left and that way all the cymbol tweaking doen't effect the kick or whatever.
even if your drum machine cant do that specifically.......recording stereo tracks of the drums allows you to emahasize different parts of the drum mix( if you so choose) with EQ or other processing.
you can still send the tracks dead center to the minidisk (as if it were mono) but you gain a tad bit more pre-bounce control over the sound.
obviously you can do the same with the guitar tracks.

also, the 424mkIII has a good mixer set up so you can make good use of the effect sends and returns while you bounce.

rock on.

p.s. did you get monitors????

thats my best bet FZ, stereo drum machine tracks(i got boss dr660) then stereo guitar tracks. bounce to mini disc. then back to tape. the cymbol sounds do kinda suck. I got a real vocalist( opposed to my hack voice) to do 2 takes over one of my songs last night, I used a 57 to do that with a beringer pre(from my board) and a compressor.
I guess the only way to use the comressor is to use it while a record a track, my buddy told me not to run a compressor thru thru the tascam fx loop. what do you think?
No real moniters yet, im using a powered pevey 12'' floor moniter.
its eathier a mini tube pre an a con. mic or moniters. hmmmmmm?
thanks fz file for the feed back.
