Help - Skipping/Jumpy/unsynced sound

I'm really new to all this so forgive me
Today i bought a Samson CO3U USB microphone, to use with Sonar Producer 8, but when i record any sound, the sound becomes really jumpy, and skips a lot, and records about 1 bar behind time. I then took out my old (10 year old) pc's sound card to put it in my computer to see if that does anything, but nope, it didn't. Its a Creative SB Live! Value (CT4780).
But when I export the audio into mp3, it plays normally again.

Would I need a mixer? Or another sound card perhaps? Or a setting in cakewalk? the mic works for Windows sound recorder and Windows live messenger regardless of what sound card I have.

Should I refund the USB microphone and get a mixer with a microphone? because I also play guitar and have an electronic drum set. Or is there a mixer which has some sort of USB microphone input.

Please help! Thank you

I'm lousy at p/c internals' but just to get you rolling :o, sure sounds like software, maybe sound card or the usb' mic problems. A mixer is not needed
-given a decent interface, and set-up.
Do some more searches on your specific suspect pieces (sometimes it helps to search on one piece at a time too.
Clues will come to light. :)
