Help Setting Up Studio

What's up.

I am in need of advice in setting up my equipment so it works well with Sonar 3.

Here's what I have:

Sonar 3 Producer Edition
Delta 1010 soundcard
Mackie 1202VLZ Pro mixer
Neumann TLM103 Mic
Mackie HR824 speakers


How I want it setup:

I would like to use my mixer mainly as a preamp for my mic, sending that into the soundcard. Then I would like to send the soundcard output back into the mixer so I can control the volume of my speakers with the mixer.
I also need to have input monitoring setup without creating a feedback loop.

I'm still relatively new to all this, and all of these inputs and settings have my head spinning.

Get a mic preamp and use the VLZ pro as playback mixer with two channel inputs for Delta 1010, two channels for your synth, other for yor processors etc....you could put a mic in teh 1st channel for tal back use. which wont come in the soundcard input.....connect your monitors to control out or main out. It would be a great setup. It is just my suggestion. Ask other for more.
If you dont want to buy a preamp, I hope you can use the aux return for the soundcard playback. i am not familiar with it.

I do this. My mixer is a Soundcraft F1, but it doesen't have Channel Outputs. What I did is:

I made some cables myself. Used stereo-plugs but didn't attached cables to the ring. Only to the tip and ground. These cables (8 cables) goes from the Insert on each channel on the mixer the inputs on my soundcard.

The signal is broken right after the gain-knob (that's how the Inserts work), and I therefore can't use the mixer EQ, pan or volume-fader to control the signal. But I'm okay with it as I mix my tracks within Sonar anyway.

Now, the output(s) to my soundcard is connected to a stereo-input on my mixer, and I can therefore control my monitors with the main fader on the mixer (because the inputsignal going into the mic.inputs on my mixer goes nowhere but into the soundcard)

It's a brilliant setup IMHO!
