Hey guys, I'm new here and this site is great. I was looking around to find a better way for my band to record. You can check out our first couple recordings at our site:

if anyone has any suggestions on how we can record better, i'd love it. right now we're recording in the drummer's garage with a camcorder  . I was thinking about something simple, like a mic and a mixer into our computer, or maybe a mic straight into a computer. We're on a tight budget so the simpler the better. thanks for any suggestions

What kind of budget are you looking at? You can get lots of suggestions, but none of them will do you any good if you can't afford it. Tell us how much you can spend, and I'm sure someone here can give you what you are looking for.

Also, give the specs on your pc: soundcard, harddrive size, RAM. This will help determine what you can do with your pc.

I listened to your mp3, and you would probably gain a lot with a mixer. The sound was heavy on the high end, almost painful to the ears, and the vocals were completely buried. A mixer and a decent soundcard will probably be all you need. Look at MAudio, they make some good ones.

i have a Creative Audigy 2 ZS soundcard, and our budget is probably around 300-400 dollars. I know we can get a 4-track for that price but i'm not sure about a microphone. is it ok to just use 1 mic for the entire band? if we use 4 tracks as we should, i dunno if we can mic up the drums well.

You can get away with recording your band with one mic, but only one track at a time that way. I suggest getting the 4-track recorder, and a few more mics. You won't get very good sound trying to record with just one mic.
To mic drums effectively, you will need mics made for it, and at least 3 of them. You could probably do it with one, but it won't sound the same. Best start saving your money. Another route you might look into is taking that 300-400 dollars and booking some studio time. If you don't have the money for equipment, it's something to consider.
