Help!Problem installing Win98

I'm trying to load Win98 on an old computer(pent266,64 mb sdram).I get as far as "the diagnostic tools were successfully loaded to drive D,then,MSDEX Version2.25 Drive E:=MSCD001 unit o.To get help,type HELP and press ENTER.
Then I get an A:prompt.I don't recall having to type anything when loading windows in the past.The cdrom is an old Sony,so maybe the driver isn't working,I dunno.Any ideas?
 
Nevermind.I read the manual.Someone slap me,please!
 
Your installing?

DOS uses two files upon startup. One is called CONFIG.SYS and the other is AUTOEXEC.BAT. I am assuming that you mean your having trouble starting Windows. By the looks of your statement you have two hard drives in your system. If this is not the case then you will have to make some changes to the config.sys in this system and maybe even in CMOS. Please let us know either way.

Outside of that here goes:
Autoexec.bat should have the word WIN as its last line.
This line tells your computer to load windows. You can test this by typing win right there at the c:\ prompt. (you get there by typing c: and then hit the enter key. If it loads then just editing the autoexec.bat file is what you need. To open this file to see what's in it you will need to type this command at the C:\
Edit autoexec.bat and then hit enter.

This should open a blue screen with a bunch of stuff. Use the arrow key to scroll down to the bottom and see if WIN is there. If it not you can type it in now. Then hit the "alt" button the "F" button and then the "X" button and choose yes to save the changes. The next time you reboot it will automatically start windows.

However, if it doesnt start windows when you type WIN at the C:\ then you have an installation problem. You will need to reformat your drive and then reinstall WIN98. Although WIN ME is easier to load I would stay away from it for recording purposes.
I hope this helps. Not much info to go on. But I realize that if you aren't a pro at this that even forming a question that would lead to the answer might be hard.

No I was promoted, they just told you I was fired so you would not get nosey when i came up missing, and butt hurt when the truth came out. Dont worry man, I am looking out for the little guy. lol
