I don't see the issue. There's a slot, and basically there's no way to misthread the tape as long as the covers are in place. These things were pretty much designed to be idiot proof. All the intricate "threading" takes place when you turn the lever to play or record.

As the pdf covered all bases, i suspect something might be going wrong. We need more info, because as said above, these were a consumer product so technical skill involved. If you are struggling, possibly something that should retract hasn’t, blocking the path. Take the head cover off and post a pic and we can try to advise.
