I've been recording with Cool Edit Pro 2.0 for a few weeks now. The only problem is that I can't hear myself in the headphones when I am singing. I can only hear the backing track. I am using an AT2020 USB microphone, which is not plugged in through the sound card, as it doesn't have connections for it. I just bought a C-Media sound card, which has full duplex capabilities. My headphones are Sennheiser and are plugged in through the sound card. I have tested the sound card and can hear myself in the microphone through its test features, but never when I record in CEP 2.0. I have checked as many settings as I could find through the 'control panel' sounds and audio devices section. Nothing is muted. What am I missing or haven't checked yet? Any ideas? Thanks.

OMG.... your headphones are too thick...

But seriously, can you see that your singing is (potentially) recording whilst doing this? ie. can you see the waveform happening on the track (I'm not familiar with CE Pro, I'm afraid...

Armistice - Yes I can see the waveform whil I am recording. I can record the vocals but I just can't hear them in the headphones. And, yes these headphones are monsters...lol

c7sus - What is echo audio function and where would I find it? Thanks again!

I used to use Cool Edit WAY back in the day before I upgraded to Audition. I do seem to remember having issues similar to this. I think alot of the issue comes through your external hardware. Basic signal routing and I could be wrong, but I believe you need some sort of interface to send out the recording signal as well as the backing signal. I do not think a sound card can do this on its own. Again, I am not possitive on this though. If someone is able to get it to work, I would be interested to hear how.

As I mentioned though, I have Audition 3.0 and use a Profire 2626 for routing my signals so I can hear both. Hopefully you can figure something out. If all else fails, you can resort to the age old trick of only haveing your headphones on one ear.

i'm not failure with the program, but what about lowering the level of the master fader, raising the level of wherever your input monitoring is coming thru.
then raise the output going to the phones (might be in the sound card setting)
i guess work the sound-card function along with the daw function to get where you need to be.

Thanks for all the advice. I have tried everything and anything, and it just doesn't seem to work. I believe that the only way that I will be able to hear my vocals in the headphones is with 2 options, Option 1 (no cost) - Take the advice of PHRIQ and listen with one headphone on, or Option 2 (about $200) - Buy an Audio interface device and buy a regular plug microphone to use with it...I'll take Option 1 thank you :)

When I first got started with recording and music around Jr. year of high school about 9 years ago, I used Cool Edit for probably 4 years and did that very thing for recording vocals. It is ok while you experiement and decide whether this is something you would prefer to invest more in. Good luck with your recordings!
