I have some questions and I will sleep well again when I get to know the answers!!!!!! I had a Tascam 07 4-track and I want to try digital. I need something that let me work with each track separately.

Here are my questions!!!!

1- 2 tracks simultaneous recording !!! What the hell does it means???

2- I´m thinking of buying a digital multitrack. I´ve been reading a lot and I think I will get the Fostex VF-08 or the Korg D8. Wich one do you recommend me? (I can only afford this models)

3- I need to know if I can work with my computer and the multitrack at the same time. I mean, can I record directly to my computer HD?

Thanks a lot for your time!!!!

Well, since simultaneous means at the same time, it means you can record 1 or 2 tracks at the same time. This might not be a limiting factor to some, but would be a real pain in the ass to others. No way to record a drum kit with individual drums on individual tracks. The best you could do is record the kit with multiple mics as a stereo pair.
How good is your PC? If you have a decent computer you should skip the standalone DAW route. Recording on the PC is the way to go.

Yes, I know that simultaneous means at the same time, but my problem is... if I´m playing 4 instruments I only can record 2 or I can record all of them but only in 2 tracks? (so when I want to mix my music I can´t work with my 4 instruments separately).

Anyway, I have a 550 pentium III with 128 Mhz of RAM a SB Live MP3+ and a 10 GB HD. (but I can upgrade it if it´s necesary).

Excuse me, but what do you mean with DAW? (sorry but I´m a beginner).

DAW = Digital Audio Workstation.
Before you jump into anything, do a lot more research.
Your at a point where you don't know what you don't know yet. There are several boards like this. Go through and read every post. That PC of yours is better than the one I'm using (AMD K-6 2, 350 Mhz). With the right sound card or interface you could probably record close to 16 simultaneous tracks. You could probably get a track total from anywhere from 40-60 tracks of audio on that PC. Your not going to be able to do that on one of those porta-DAWS you're looking at.
Research first. Don't ask questions, read answers.
Every pertinent question a newbie needs answered has been answered. Check out these sites too.

Don't buy anything until you know exactly what options are out there.

To record more tracks at once you would need a soundcard with more than a stereo input....if not you would have to go thru a mixer and then into the soundcard, but then you wont have control over the individual tracks...BTW, what 4 instruments can you play at the same time, or are you referring to a band?

Is there an echo in here?

...or does E-money just want to have the last word!!!

:D :D

Bruce

No, just an echo., though I do have the last word again.

Thanks a lot E-money I will do what you' ve said.
If you don't mind I will do another question... I've been reading about this USB devices. What do you think about them?
And, What do you think about the Aardvark Direct Pro LX6?
Thanks again...

Gidge: I´m referring to a band. We are two basses (YES, TWO), one guitar or piano, and my drum machine. We usually play in my house and we are recording into a Tascam Porta 07. But we are limited because when we want to do the mixdown we can't work with each track individually.

I haven't heard anything good about the USB stuff. I don't think USB has the bandwidth to handle serious digital audio, though I could be wrong. I think if I was in your shoes I would look into the Maudio products. The Delta 1010 has 8 analog ins and outs, and a stereo pair of digital ins and outs, all in the $600 range. If you don't need that many ins and outs, you could opt for the Delta 66 whcih has 4 ins and outs and a stereo pair of digital ins and outs. A very nice starter setup would be the Delta 66 coupled with the Maudio omni studio. This gives you the 4 ins and outs, stereo digital ins and outs, and microphone preamps. It basically would take the place of a mixer for you and allow you to plug mics, keyboards, bass and guitar in and record. You can get the Delta 66 and Omni for $400.
I don't know much about the Aardvark stuff, people seem to like it. I believe they make one that has multiple ins and outs and preamps too. Do a search on this site and you'll find opinions on their stuff.
I think you should think about software before hardware. There are many programs that run on PC's. Some do Audio only, and some do Audio and MIDI. I use Cakewalk 8.03 which is a couple versions old now, but it works well for me. It does audio and midi. You can download demo versions of a lot of the recording software. There are a couple of shareware (really cheap) recorders out there that get great reviews (N-track costs around $40, but people love it) Does your PC have a sound card in it now? If so, you can probably try demo versions of many softwares with your current setup. You can email me at escott85@home.com if you have more questions, or post them here.

E-money you are God to me... lot's of thanks...
Can I boder you with another question???
Since I'm from Argentina, I don't know a good music store in the US. My brother is travelling next week to Washington D.C and San Francisco. I know that SamAsh is good, but i don't know the prices they have. Do you know another good places???
I'm like a young balls breaking brother!!!!

Hmmm.... E-money turned off his delay this time!

:D

Bruce ;)

I don't buy anything at stores, except strings and picks and such (which is funny because my town has a Sam Ash, Guitar Center and Mars within 5 minutes of each other). I buy everything online. You can almost always get a better price online. Your situation may be different down there. I have bookmarks for several online music stores. I'll check each one for the lowest price. If I find 2 with the dame low price, I'll call and see which one will give me free shipping, or throw something in to sweeten the deal (T-shirts always come in handy).
www.bayviewproaudio.com has great prices on the Maduio stuff.
It looks like Sam Ash has the Delta omni for $399 which seems to be the going rate for it. Check it out on their web page www.samash.com. It gives a nice description as well. I plan on buying one soon myself.

Ok, I think that's all I needed to know.
Thanks again, and again, and again...
