Hi,

I've worked in a small studio setup before, and set it up. But now I'm working with a better mixer I'm having trouble setting it up with my computer. I know my tape out (from my mixer) I need a mini to rca jack. And I got that, now the problem is, getting what sounds heard from the computer to be ran threw the mixer, but not recorded. So I can import the instrumental on one track.....let it play and record over it, with the recording on a seperate track

PLEASE help me, I know there's experienced people in this forum that are more than eager to help....=)

You need to have at least two separate paths to be able to route audio through the mixer in this way. The minimum thing you need is what's called an Alt bus -- an extra pair of outputs that can be routed independently from the "normal" stereo outs. There might also be some clever tricks with Aux sends but I've never tried that.

Here's the way I have my mixer set up:

Soundcard line outs to channels 5 and 6
Main outs to monitor speakers
Alt 3+4 outs to soundcard line in

When I want to record, I plug something in one of the mixer channels and assign that channel to the Alt 3+4 bus. Then it goes into one or the other of the soundcard inputs, say the Left. I set up a track in my recording software to record off this left line in, then hit Record. I adjust the levels with the Alt 3+4 bus controls, while anything already recorded comes out the monitors. The Alt 3+4 is also routed to the monitors so I can hear whatever is going in there. If I'm using a mic, I just turn off the monitors and use headphones instead, so I don't get bleed from the speakers back into the mic.
